Virginia’s Devils Backbone Brewing Company, with Brewmaster Jason Oliver, was a perfect partner for us to do a collaboration beer. Not only is Devils Backbone one of the most award winning breweries in the country over the last few years, but Jason hails from Heavy Seas’ home port of Baltimore. Also, Ernie Igot, Heavy Seas’ Brewmaster, is clearly a lager lover and specialist, and he and Jason had a great time conceiving and developing this special lager. It has been a privilege working with both of these gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy the result of this joint effort.

Bottle (courtesy of Travlr). Cola, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Dark chestnut with giant tan head. Sweet chocolate fudge malt and mildly bitter hay flavor. Nice body. Tasty.

This brew is a brown-black color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasted malt and hops in the nose. Light to medium body with a roasty character and flavors of peppery hops and sweet malt. The finish is mildly bitter with a grassy hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

Pours black with a tall, long lasting off-white head. Light roast malt aroma, light ash. The flavor is light roast malt with just enough hop bittering to balance this one out nicely. Easy drinking. A great one for those who think they don’t like "dark" beer.

bottle - Pours near black with a roasted malt aroma. It has mild hops bitterness, roast character, a medium body, and overall is fairly good but not that special.

Bomber courtesy of Pete (non-RB) and to some extent GT2. Pours clear reddish dark brown with a frothy beige head that leaves some lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with roasted malts, dark bread, cereal, grass, burnt caramel and hints of coffee. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter, malty and metallic with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, grass, lemon zest, burnt caramel, dark bread, charred wood and hints of liquorice root. Mouthfeel is crisp, round, very tiny tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is slightly bitter and tiny metallic with roasted malts, dark bread, grass and lemon zest.

Purchased at Hop City in Atlanta, GA; enjoyed prior to sticking it out in traffic to get from one end of the city to the other in rush hour. Appearance a very dark coffee brown with an apparent white head that rims around the glass. Aroma of light chocolate, bit of yeast, bit of nut. Taste a little thin but not bad, definite chocolate presence, moderate body with lighter carbonation. Decent stuff.

Whole Foods, Vienna VA 650ml ($5): Pours a dark brown colour with an off-white head. Aroma is mostly like that of a pilsner... grass, grain, hops... and it just has a hint of dark beerness going up through it. Taste is somewhat similar. The pils is really prominent with just an undertone of dark beer. Very well-balanced and very sessionable. This is an interesting take on schwarz and one I certainly like.

Draft courtesy of James at Blowtoad, thank you sir! Very dark brown, thick beige head with hood retention. Aroma of coffee grounds and grass. Taste is similar, very roasty. Could use more hops.

Grainy, light cola nose. Clear chestnut, medium yellow head, nice lacing. Grainy, then nutty flavor, walnuts. Hints of charred oak. Thin mouthfeel, astringent. A little on the weak side.
