The ‘-ator’ suffix that’s found on the names of double bock beers around the world is one of the most respected traditions in a beer world that seems to be focused on ignoring standards and customs. Smuttynose is proud to adhere to that tradition in the naming, brewing methods and taste of S’muttonator Double Bock.
S’muttonator Double Bock displays the characteristically full malt flavor that can only come from using the best German specialty malts and a traditional decoction mashing technique. The extra effort also adds a lot of extra time to each batch, but that’s the only way to get the nuttiness, toffee notes and a characteristically smooth melanoidin character beer drinkers expect from a double bock. When you drink your S’muttonator, you’ll see that it’s time well spent.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of some generous trader. Thanks! Pours a hazy, dark rust orange appearance wit ha nice, big brown head. Really a rich herbal, noble hoppy, grainy caramel malty, mild white fruit (pear/apple), just a touch bitter aroma. Well carbonated. A bit chewy, molasses, vanilla, rich caramel malty, somewhat spicy, a touch nutty, herbal, grassy hoppy flavor with a light note of chocolate. Quite smooth. This is one of the better American-made doppelbocks that I’ve had in a while.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2010 release. Pours hazy reddish copper color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass, with a good amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big raisin, prune, biscuit, toast, molasses, toffee, caramel, nuttiness, earth, light roasted malt, and herbal. Very nice and well balanced doppelbock aromas with good complexity. Taste of big raisin, molasses, prune, toffee, biscuit, toast, nuttiness, earth, light roasted malt, and herbal spiciness. Light spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, molasses, toffee, toast, caramel, biscuit, nuttiness, roasted malt, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor complexity and balance. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a moderate warming after the finish. This was very easy to sip on when I opened it, and it gained a bit more heat as it warmed up. Overall this is a damn nice doppelbock. Nice flavor balance and complexity; and pretty smooth to sip on. Got a little bit boozy as it warmed up, but was still a highly enjoyable brew.

2011 bottle purchased in NYC (appears to be bottle conditioned0. Pours with a pretty much clear (first pour), bronze hue (somewhat light in color) body with a large and lasting, tan head. Aromas are very, very estery and fruity for a doppelbock. Somewhat disappointing. Although the yeasty/fruit character is not quite the main character, it is distracting from the malt. Good complexity here. Bready, toasty, marzipan, nutty, maple. Sweet, but in a malty instead of caramel way. Some perceived spicy notes. Lots of malt caramelization. Flavors are a bit sweet, but very malt and complex. Some spicy character. Lots of kettle caramelization, mild burning alcohol on the esophagus, malty, bready, nearly syrupy. Mild dark fruit undertones, fusel, toast, munich and a ton of melanoidins. Dark fruit esters are strong, but the malt is there. Sweet, but not in a caramel way. In fact there is a very, very dry finish. The alcohol sweetness and fusel is a bit too pervasive. Big body, fuller mouthfeel. Medium to slightly fuller bodied. Has its highs and lows both to style and in overall enjoyment. Overall it is a "strong" success.

Bomber from Wine & Beer Westpark. Pours a slightly hazy reddish color with a thin tan head that fades quickly. Aroma of dark malts, toffee, chocolate, raisins, light toastiness. The taste is toasted malts, raisins, chocolate, caramel, faint hop finish. Medium-full bodied with a bit of alcohol warmth. Nice.

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this one yet. 2008 Bottling sampled 11/30/2008 Pours a deep brown with a beautifully clear ruby tint when held to light. Bubbly two finger head leaves mad lacing on the glass. Smells of caramel malt, some dried fruits and a touch of alcohol. Taste is sweet with malts and more of the dried fruits. Some brown sugar, then a bit of alcohol lingers in the finish as well as a little smoke. Creamy mouthfeel, bubbly carbonation, medium to thick in the body. Great Dopplebock from smutty, I need to put a few more of these away for sure.

Grainy horehound aroma. Hazy ochre, thin head. Flavor is dates and cherries primarily, but horehound and cashews are also present. Alcohol is not noticeable. I’m not a fan of the style and certainly not this sample.
