Thanks to Dorwart for this trade last year. Finally opened to share at my club’s Bock tasting. So this is well over a year old. It hit us all with a big alcohol nose. Pours a nice head of foam even into plastic cups for sampling. Has some of the character of a Belgian dark beer, with some candi sugar sweetness. But very smooth, like "Cream of Malt." A great break from the Hubers and Leinies we had before cracking this one!

Light brown head on a brown body. Sweet malty flavor and a molassas flavor.

Slightly hazy brown coloured body with a nice tan head, completed by strong ruby highlights. Aroma of roasted malt, pit fruits, prunes and a light toffee scent. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet nutty fruityness with a roasty malt flavour and a good balance between bitter and sweet. Aftertaste clean, but showing good qualities from the taste. Overall, a good beer - what the style should be, but missing some new complexities. Great to try though! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Village Pump Liquors in College Park, Maryland on 01-April-2005 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Orangey-amber with a little haze. The aroma is assertively alcoholic and plasticy. Strong big malts with light plastic taste. Not bad but the balance is a bit to the strong side.

Thanks to Probiere for bring this to the SE gathering at KP’s. Clear deep mahogany color with an off-white head. Big malt aroma that leads in to a caramel flavor that comes across the tongue smooth and easy. More Bock than a Doppelbock to me. A bit of chalkiness inthe finish, but overall, not too bad.

Bottled. Dark ruby. Raisiny crystal malt aroma. Sweet an malty, but with clean, hard, syrupy mouthfeel. There’s caramel and some apples. Grassy bitter finish. Lacking in malt character.

Provided by John (JCW) at a tasting. Clearish red-brown body, thin off-white head. Nice caramely, bready aroma. Dense caramel body with dark fruits (including a touch of raisin and prune). Very toasty with plenty of brown sugar in the finish. Medium-bodied. Alcohol was detectable (didn’t realize the ABV was so high in this beer!) in addition to a touch of smoke. A solid, competent American doppelbock.

On draught January 2005 at Redbones. Delightful color to this, reds, golds, oranges and coppers all mix to form a brilliant, deep, colorful body. Small light beige head. Aroma of German yeast, smooth hops and sweet caramel and toffee. Very sweet up front, with apparent hops quickly coming to balance. Remains mostly sweet however, with a tingly, strong carbonation to it and a medium-full body. Brandy soaked fruit, bittersweet yeast and orange citrus flavors all come in to play. Ends on a candied orange note with some lightly sticky caramel lurking. I don’t like what they did with the hops here, this dosent seem very traditional. Call me old fashioned, but I’d like a whole lot less in the way of citric hops and bitterness. Little to any chocolate and not nearly as much yeast flavor as I would like. That being said, I will give it points for potential, as I’m sure this stuff will age gracefully; it should lose a lot of the annoying carbonation, the hops should die down and perhaps some earthy yeast tones will emerge. Will be back in a year.
