Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that it’s built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that it’s bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that it’ll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone who’s counting), but what it mainly knows is that it’s a great beer.

22 ounce bottle. Labelled as Savant. Amber orange color with a rocky beige head. Mild citrus and pine hop aroma. Bitter complex malty hop flavor has notes of tropical fruit and pine hops. Nicely balanced with a big hoppy finish.

Bottle: Stunning copper pour. Great clarity, bright color, and a modest tan head with even sheet lacing. A perfect 5 for appearance, no doubt about it. Lively aroma of resin and fruity hops. Plenty of citrus. The taste is more herbal and floral than expected, but still a little resin to boot. Caramel malt. Has a little of the subdued organic vibe that detracts from the intensity of the brew. Not like it’s watered down, more like running at 75% strength. Overall it’s good, but could have pushed beyond very good with more flavor impact.

Sample at the Pike Street location (as "Savant IPA"). Pours a clear pale amber color with a medium bone white head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, hops and caramel malt. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, grapefruit and sweet malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrus hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilbur’s Foco. This beer is now named Savant IPA, so that should be aliased here. Pours a hazy, bright, deep reddish orange appearance with a cream colored head. Fruity, grapefruity, white grape, citrusy, somewhat spicy, fairly potent hoppy, light ganja aroma. Quite spicy and floral hoppy, somewhat piney, big grapefruity hoppy, mildly sweet malty flavor with some herbal, bitterness on the finish. Another solid Elysian IPA, though I don’t think I enjoy it as much as some of their others.

Bomber @ OT. Pours clear pale amber with a creamy offwhite head that slowly dissipates while leaving some sticky lacing on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet, slightly malty and slightly hoppy with white bread, caramel, green grapes, moist grass, white grapes, red currants and hints of vanilla fudge and alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, tiny fruity and herbal with bread, moist grass, white grapes, lemon balm, wood, gooseberries, moist wood, unripe mango and hints of caramel, wet leaves and pine. Mouthfeel is smooth, round and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and herbal with moist grass, wood, pine, green grapes, gooseberries and lemon balm. Possibly a bit unfresh but still holds up well.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 23 Sep 2012) Reddish amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with red fruit, citrus, blood orange and caramel. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, orange peel, blood orange, red fruit and a generous resiny bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a slight sweetness. Tasty and solid IPA with a fresh hop profile.Very nice.

Had to try this, since I’m such a fan of this hop - clear copper, sudsy lace - there is a light sweetness and tea-like character in the nose, but the zesty and tropical notes of the hops are most prominent - medium carbonation - flavor has a light, clean sweetness up front, but it is mostly dry throughout, especially in the finish - the malt backbone mostly stays out of the way, but provide a sturdy base for the potent, peppery/spicy hop flavors - quite bitter, but not in any way abrasive - finish is very dry - very solid IPA.
