Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that it’s built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that it’s bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that it’ll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone who’s counting), but what it mainly knows is that it’s a great beer.

Bottle thanks to Ben! Pours a clear amber orange with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of earthy pine hops with a bit of dankness and backing grapefruit and sweet bread. Flavor begins with grapefruit and pine that has a growing resinous note and a hint of a grain backbone.

On tap at Parkway Tavern, pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of resinous hops and pine, caramel malt and some herbally / pot-like notes. Flavour of weed-like hops, herbal hops and sufficient toasted malt to back. A bit too weed-like, but still well-made. Good.

An orange amber IPA with a thin white head. In aroma, a pleasant pungent grapefruity hops, resinous and floral, lightly funky, marmelade. In mouth, a smooth bitter IPA with biscuitty malt, pinhey hops, catnip, very nicely balanced, not in your face, medium bodied. On tap at Oregon Brewer’s Fest, July 31 2011.

Cask at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Muddy amber color, with creamy small head. Very nice aroma, sweet and fruity; apricot and oranges; some malt. Good toffee flavor, sweetish, with huge hopping; fruity and resiny, piney; lots of bitter oranges and some grapefruit; but also a bit yeasty and just overly bitter, which means the final is then quite harsh. Fresh.
