Bottle. 2004 vintage. Rich caramel beer with a small whitish head. Malty, caramel aroma with slight sherry oxidation. Rich caramel malt flavor with brown sugar and faint NW hops. Medium-plus body. Nice balance. Lingering caramel/brown sugar. Alcohol slightly warming.

Thanks to decaturstevo I think for sharing this one. Small tan head that sits above an orange/amber body. Complex malt aroma with fruit and alcohol. Sweet smooth and complex body and flavor, although a bit thin.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy amber colour with a nice, creamy, yellowish brown head. Lovely aroma of sweet caramel and aroma hops. Full body with lots of sweetish caramel flavours and aroma hops. Some slightly medicinal notes. 211006

A hazy amber beer with a light orange head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of hops, as well as lighter notes of alcohol and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with primary notes of caramel, but also a light metallic note from the alcohol, leading to a dry alcoholic end, where the alcohol burns slightly in the top of the throat.

Cask 2005 Vintage Cask, but unconditioned, murky, all yeast in suspension. Smell of jenever, enormously alcoholic, appealing. Jenever taste, but also adstringent, pungent tastes of yeast, brandy cask, sugar (cane-) and other rather aggressive, intimidating substances. Thick is one way of putting it. Off. As the brewer - who chivalrously admitted that the cask had been omitted to vent - knows, casks are to be treated as prime high school girls, not like bimbo’s! Deserves a second rating under better circumstances.

Draught at the brewpub. Hazy nut brown. Severely malty with tick and extremely syrupy mouthfeel. There’s plenty of grapefruity hops, but they drown in an ocean of syrup. Sticky bitter finish. Very raw and unrefined, hopefully some time in the cellar can mature the stickyness away, but I doubt it’ll ever become great.

BW tasting at Dumdum’s, Late March 2005. Lightly hazy orange amber ale, with a nice off-white head. Sweet esters of fruits and floral hops come out, with orange notes. Sweet honey malt in mouth, with floral hops in attack, lingering bitterness and warm alcohol. Rather sweet, bitter and simple. Thanks Cap.

Golden-amber colour. Aroma has off-phenols. Rich brown sugary character with butter and nuts. That would make a good dessert, but as a barley wine, it’s a little odd. Warming finish. Long, tasty finish.

2003 bottle (thanks Andre). Pours a typical northwest barley (dark brownish-amber) with a decent tan head. Smells bitter and hoppy, with some light malt hints. Flavor is very bitter at first, with a sweetness in the background. Palate is lightly oily, a bit of thinning towards the end and as it warms. Flavor just never really gets that exciting. Very unadventurous hops and malt. In fact, the flavor was so unwaveringly simple, that it got very boring towards the end. Not a bad beer, just nothing to go crazy about. Perhaps some more aging will do it good.
