Winter Ale

In 2003, we had a massive 37-inch snowstorm over two days in Fort Collins. Everything shut down for a couple days – no work, no school, no cars. The only way you could get around was by ski or toboggan. When we began brewing Snow Day, we looked to this one storm for inspiration. The dark characters of the malt bill reflect the dark stormy sky at the beginning of the snowfall. But on the third day, the sun broke through and everything was glorious! The name Snow Day evoked joyful freedom. Everyone remembers waiting for the school report as little kids. When you heard your school was closed, you suddenly had all day to play in the transformed, white landscape. Well, that’s the kind of emotion we put into this beer.

Pleasantly hoppy, Snow Day carries the subtle chocolate and caramel flavors of a new brewing malt known as Midnight Wheat. The Styrian Golding, Centennial and Cascade hops bring the backbone of hoppy bitterness to complement the roasty undertones. This beer is the deep garnet of a roasted walnut and presents a creamy tan head, floating artfully atop. Snow Day is bold and hoppy, drinkable and strong. It reminds you to enjoy the unexpected.

Bottle. When I first poured this one, I expected a malty beer. Boy I was wrong. It was deep and dark and had a brown head that lingered only slightly. The aroma was citrus, spice with just a slight hint of coffee. The flavor was like an IPA with just a touch more malt. Nice.

Dark brown colour with big creamy beige head. Aroma is a bit like old smoke, lots of roastiness, bit of hops poking through. Little bit of chocolate and spice. Touch of funk too. Interesting but a bit strange. Taste is nice. Biscuity maltiness, quite dry roastiness, touch of the usual chocolate and bit of coffee too. Very very biscuity! Not as bitter as I would expect but maybe this has lost something on the way over to Japan. Slight lingering hoppiness though, citrussy maybe. Tastes really good actually, even if it is not exactly how it was when it started.

Bottles drunk Winter 2013
Dark ebony with cocoa tints and high clarity. Dark beige head shows a bit better retention than most NBs.
Nose actually contains hops. Cascade-like citrus notes with light pine and grapefruit aren’t exactly wonderful, but you almost feel good that it doesn’t smell like stale seawater. Roast isn’t too heavy, adding light coffee suggestions and a hint of vanilla. It mixes together pretty well but for the strong breadiness that someone disrupts it. No alcohol or flaw.
In the mouth it’s got a decently malty texture. Nothing terribly supple, but passable, with oily, lightly char-filled roasted notes and green, piney hops. Moderate bitterness, overcarbonated but better than average for this brewery (which still isn’t saying much).

12oz bottle pours out dark brown almost black topped with a tan head. Nose is pine citrus hops some light roast malts and a little chocolate. Taste is more of the pine citrus hop combo along with the roast malts.

Bottle. Found this lost in the backlog; enjoyed 2/16/13. Dark brown pour with a modest beige head. Roasty nose, cocoa, and piney. The citrus and floral hops come through as dominant in the flavor, but still a fair amount of roast/toasted malt. Light cocoa. Good stuff.
