Brewed as a medium India Pale Ale, this full-flavored moderately hopped beer has the strongest hop character of our ales. Made for hopheads and new beer aficionados. The grist composition is 94% Pale malt, with the remaining grain bill consisting of carastan malts. The finishing Mt. Hood hop addition in the whirlpool gives this beer a good hop character without becoming excessively bitter. The beer is fined instead of filtered so the hop character is not stripped away.

Sampler at the Schaumburg RAM. Okay, maybe it’s because I’m chatting with the friendly brewmaster, but I’m really liking this stuff. That and the fact that a sampler "Curl" is $5, no matter how many samples are on it, and I have 10! So this is a derker amber color, and still has a good layer of foam although it’s been on the bar a while. Again, my nose was hampered by a cold and restroom soap, so just a general yes on the aroma. A large pine and resin hop note that swims to coat my soft palate. In other words, a hop goblin.

Tap. Sweet orange and grapefruit peel/pine aroma. Golden yellow color with small head. Sweet orange and moderately bitter grapefruit peel/pine hops flavor. Good, standard IPA.

On tap at Humperdink’s. Pours a clear yellow with minimal head. The aroma is pine needles and hay. The flavor is unpleasantly bitter from front to finish, with little balance. The palate is medium and uneventful, with a long bitter aftertaste. Overall, this is a simple and underwhelming IPA.

Not a terrible beer. Tap at Humperdinks Arlington. Clear orange with a nice aroma of citrus and light pine. Bitter and metallic taste. Overall better skipped.

draft at the Fishers, IN brewpub - Pours clear copper with a citrus and pine hop aroma. It tastes of caramel malt, lots of caramel malt, and a moderately hopped flavor that leads into a strongly bitter finish. It’s medium bodied and overall a pretty solid brew.

On tap at brewpub in downtown Indianapolis. Thought this was an easy-drinking, flavorful IPA. Light amber body with an off-white, fizzy head that was lasting. Aroma of citrus and toffee — hints of grapefruit, pine. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. The bitterness kicks up a notch in the finish. Medium body with a watery texture. Lively carbonation. Very dry.

Listed as Big Red I.P.A. Had at Humperdinks on Greenville. Prettiest beer of the taster I had. Very nice retention and great lacing from the white head. Light fruity notes in the aroma. Very watery taste with floral elements, finishes like a bitter IPA. Very watery and thin body.

On draft @ Ram. Served up way too cold in an 18oz tumbler. This big red IPA doesn’t really look all that red. It’s kind of a light copper with abundant tan head. The aroma is light but has a nice grapefruit hop punch with much lesser amounts of malt. The flavor has a tasty grapefruit hop bitterness with hints of a floral hop quality. Near midway a sweet pale to lightly roasted maltiness comes out. Not long after the maltiness succumbs to the somewhat bitter grapefruit hop finish. Nice IPA.

Cloudy amber color. Very nice aroma of fruity hops, oranges and other citrus fruits, a touch of tropical fruits. Good lean body, with a semi-dry mouthfeel, good malt and toffee flavor, and immediate hopping, more resiny than fruity, but still with a lemony edge; long final.
Fresh, hop forward and very pleasant.
2006-12-17, draught at Humperdink’s, Dallas, as Big Red IPA, 8-4-7-4-15=38
Light amber color; thin head, nice lace. Fruity hop aroma, resiny. Medium body structure, heavy hopping (with some resins, aggressive enough) but not enough malty. Good.
