bottle - Pours clear amber with a thin head. The aroma is sweet malt and the flavor is the expected caramel malt of this style. It was lightly hopped. While I like my irish ales with a bit more hops bite, this beer was still pretty good.

On tap at the Bocktown bar in the Robinson Twp shopping complex. They were having a Great Lakes tasting night. Pours light orange brown with a froth on top for a head. Not much aroma but what I do sense is sorta fruit hoppy and sweet. The initial taste does reveal some hops but it is not overpowering like most IPAs. Much milder than an IPA but has the personality of an IPA without the offensive bitterness. Very nice creamy carbonation that is enjoyable but it does not attack your tongue. The smooth bubbliness is sorta creamy champagne in nature. Finish is quite hoppy but again it is not strong medicine bitterness like an IPA. It is trying to build to that level but it ends up with a short medium bitter linger. Way better than that flat Wexford irish cream ale but not as good as Smithwicks.

Until now I have never been impressed by an Irish Red. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright reddish caramel color with a small yellow-white head that fades quickly. The aroma is sour tangy malts. The flavor is sour tangy malts with a light apple and pear element and a light zesty malt undertone. The beer is smooth and eminently drinkable. Definitely a better beer than the sum of it’s parts.

Pour is a orange with a white head. Aroma is a nice mix of hops and malts. The hops really stand out for a style known for being malty. Flavor is roasty and nutty with a bitter finish. Decent beer for st.pats.

Aroma of bread and fruit. Color is wonderful but head is pretty ho-hum. Flavor is grainy/malty with a bit of crisp hops (although a fairly spicy presence) and a little warmth due to the alcohol. A bit thin in the finish.

Thanks to OhioDad for this - clear strawberry color, nice lacing - light fruits and caramel in the aroma, along with a somewhat toasty smell - crisp, yet heavy on the malt sweetness - a roastiness and moderate hop bitterness tries to balance this, but doesn’t quite get the job done - not bad.

2005 bottle from SkepticMAP, a very gracious trader! Deep orange-red. Small bubbles rise in vertical shafts from the sides of the glass, quite aggressively. Clear. Off-white head is quickly receding to ring. Smells of light raspberries, dry toast/toasted malt, hints of alcohol. Tastes of sweet and buttery malt, lots of waxy crayons. It’s either wax or baked dough I’m tasting. Medium body, much too dry and bready on the end and I just can’t shake the notion that I’m tasting ground up crayons. Low carbonation.

Great Lakes usually provides exemplary models for the beers they create, and the fact that this brew is merely above average is kind of a letdown. Still, it’s pretty good. Deep ruby amber color with a medium beige head and thin lacing. The aroma is roasted malt and caramel. Medium-bodied and on the carbonated side, with flavors of sweet malt, light hops and a bit of fruit. The finish is clean and somewhat sweet. Overall pretty good, but I just know GLBC could knock this one out of the park if they really wanted to.

Paid $7.99 for a 6-pack. First time I have actually seen it is today. Beautiful appearance: clear, medium brown, with a gigantic, fluffy tan head. Carbonation bubbles rising throughout. Very nice. Head lasts as lasts. Sweet caramel in the nose. Very pleasing. Very nice coffee/caramel combination. It's rich, but not terribly thick. Nice, pleasant flavor! I like this brew- don't love it. It REALLY is a good beer, and I'll have it from time to time (every winter).

On tap at the Miami Inn. Red-bodied topped with an initially fluffy, soon dissipating, light tan head. Toasty aroma with caramel notes. Flavor is classic Irish Ale: toasty with a Cheerios-like grain flavor, a touch of caramel, and finishing on a bitter note. Sweeter than Goose Island Kilgubbin. A nice treat.
