Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine is a version of our Old Dipsea Barleywine that has been aged in Bourbon Barrels for about a year. This ageing contributes wood and bourbon flavors to the beer. The micro-oxygenation that occurs in the barrels mellows and smoothes out the high alcohol as dried and over-rip fruit characters evolve. Sometimes we add wild yeast for another layer of complexity.

2008 Vintage: Aged in 12-year Old Fitzgerald Barrels for 10 Weeks. *Unfiltered.

2009 Vintage: Aged in 20-year Old Fitzgerald Barrels for 10 months - bottled 01/09/09

Bottle courtesy of ygtbsm94, thanks! I think it’s really stupid that brewers are forced to add the unnecessary words "style ale" onto the label. But I digress. Plenty of whiskey in this one, in the aroma and the taste, bu too much for my taste.

22oz bottle (2009) from wavers1, thanks man
Appearance: Pours dark mahogany with a nice frothy beige head and some lacing
Aroma: Sweet malts, bourbon, woody and vanilla
Taste: Smooth and silky mouthfeel. Bourbon, vanilla, oak with some hop bitterness in the finish
This is a great Barleywine, the best I’ve had. The bourbon is very present, but not overpowering. Very refreshing.

Bottle with many thanks to wavers1. Pours plum with tan head. Nose of plum, date, earthy lambic, cherry, cinnamon stick and vanilla. Taste is same with bourbon and oak. Very light alcohol presence. Absolutely top notch.

Bottle 116 of 180 with a big thanks to ditmier for sharing this. Pours out a cloudy amber topped with a small tan head. Aroma was great lots of sweetness. Caramel, brown sugar, pit fruit, vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Taste was just as good. More of the sweetness caramel, pit fruit, rich malts, and the barrel. A very well done BA Barley Wine.

RBSG09 Grand Tasting notes (thanks to whoever brought it). Heaven Hill version. This beer was a treat, even for someone who isn’t the biggest proponent of bourbon barrel aging barleywines. A very nice melded, which is not to say weak, Bourbon flavor. The thick, rich malt flavor is sweet and fruity. Some hops were still evident in a peachy capacity, or maybe that was just malt complexity that I was confusing. There were also very nice notes of brown sugar and vanilla.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours a cloudy opaque dark brown with a creamy, beige head. Aroma has lots overripe fruit, bourbon and licorice allsorts. Quite full-bodied, again lots of caramel and overripe fruit. Sweet caramel and a warming alcohol in the finish. Absolutely no bitterness. 110709
