Extra Hoppy Brown Ale

Nothing says Christmas like hanging out with good friends and brewing up something special. Thanks to Matt Cole from Fat Head's and Richard (Ricardo) Norgrove from Bear Republic for braving pre-holiday travel to come to Stone the week before the Christmas holiday and brew this “sort of” old-school American (or Texas) brown ale. The recipe we came up with has a host of specialty malts, molasses, brown sugar, Columbus, Bravo, Brewer's Gold and, for the first time ever at Stone, Cascade hops! We’re hoping our brew brings back fond memories of some of the earliest classic craft brews. Enjoy your trip down memory lane!

A throwback to the early days of craft brewing with some interesting twists along the way. It has that classic Brewer's Gold/Cascade hop presence, with combinations of herbs, pine and citrus.

On tap at Fat Heads 7.2%. 60 IBU. Big brown ale. Rich caramel and chocolate tones, with a pleasant hop balance. Fresh. Lots of depth, solid for the style. Lighter side of full bodied.

Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT. Pours clear, amber-brown with a big, tan foam head. Maple crunch granola on the nose, some toasted cereals, pine, orange. Light to medium sweet flavor with rich toasted brown bread, mild figs, earth, faint alcohol, grapes, ripe citrus. Medium bodied with fine to average, almost lively carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with mild sticky toasted pine, bread, light baking cocoa, a bite more ripe citrus. Well balanced and nicely nuanced.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours amber with a slight haze and a creamy and lacing off-white head. Roasty, caramellish nose, a whiff of licorice. Medium body, caramel, biscuity malts, subtle roast and a rather subdued bitterness. Those 81 IBU’s are hard to detect! Pleasant if unspectacular. 260713

On draft at Fatheads N Olnstead OH. Pours deep reddish amber with an off white head. Sweet malty aroma. Flavors of biscuit with a string hop presence. Nice.

From a 12 oz bottle enjoyed in Key Largo FL. Pours a murky brown with a massive, big bubble ecru head. Hops dominate the nose. Flavors are more varied with some toasted malt and toffee along with a quite bitter hopiness. Seems somehow a bit off balance, although it is a decent beer.
