Nothing says Christmas like hanging out with good friends and brewing up something special. Thanks to Matt Cole from Fat Head's and Richard (Ricardo) Norgrove from Bear Republic for braving pre-holiday travel to come to Stone the week before the Christmas holiday and brew this “sort of” old-school American (or Texas) brown ale. The recipe we came up with has a host of specialty malts, molasses, brown sugar, Columbus, Bravo, Brewer's Gold and, for the first time ever at Stone, Cascade hops! We’re hoping our brew brings back fond memories of some of the earliest classic craft brews. Enjoy your trip down memory lane!
A throwback to the early days of craft brewing with some interesting twists along the way. It has that classic Brewer's Gold/Cascade hop presence, with combinations of herbs, pine and citrus.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that lasts throughout the beer and laces. Aroma has a good amount of pine hops with a light grapefruit note and backing dark bread with a hint of chocolate. Flavor has a combination of dark grains, light chocolate and pine hops with the hops winning out in finish.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours dark copper/amber with a 3 finger creamy beige head. Aroma is grapefruit and celery. And roast caramel. Flavor is citrus, perhaps grapefruit rind, with a touch of anise? Finishes dry and moderately bitter. Enough hop to be an IPA.

Bottle at Beermongers. A cool beer. Pours a clear copper color with a large white head. The aroma is big lime and tropical hops. A rich flavor dominated by tropical fruit and with lemon and lime, light grains, very smooth. Unusual, I liked it.

Bottle. Brown beer with a tan head. Grapefruit and pine aroma with dark malts. Chocolate and dark malt flavor with pine and light grapefruit. Medium bodied. Pine and chocolate lingers with dark malts and light grapefruit.

Enjoyed from bottle at Rockwell’s in Chicago, IL on a humid warm night prior to an international trip. Appearance is a very cloudy vibrant amber with a rich white head, in the dark light, looks like a potion. Aroma mostly hoppy with grapefruit notes, also pretty malty, has a really great balance where both elements are equally prominent. Taste is just outstanding, rich, flavorful, bitter without compromising smoothness of the style. I get the molasses a bit, but it blends nicely and its sweetish, not too sweet. Really enjoy this one.

Tap at Stone Bistro. It pours cloudy brown, with a thin off-white head. The nose is grass, pine, lime pith, hay, caramel and Turkish Delight. The taste is wood, grass, leather, hay, roasted malt, caramel, coffee beans and citrus pith, with a long bitter-dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent, if a bit unexciting.

Bottle @ home. Hazy, reddish brown appearance with a big, light brown head. Rich caramelized sugary, molasses, brown sugar, fairly piney/resiny hoppy aroma. Pretty big brown sugary, molasses, a little goopy, piney, earthy hoppy flavor. Hmmm, this one is a bit all over the place with a rich, syrupy, caramelized sugar element and then the resiny, piney hoppy element. Bleh.

Bottle. Pours with a very much hazed (outright muddy compared to most Stone beers...but that is not a complaint), medium brown hued body with a tight and some what large, off-white to tan head. Respectable lace and good retention. Aromas are of hoppy, pine, citrus, mid tropical fruit, light dank weed notes. Some dark fruit esters, strong bready malt, molasses, nutty, tobacco, earthy, mild chocolatey roast. A touch grassy. Flavors are quite bitter, grassy, earthy, nearly a touch astringent at times. Fruit forward from both hops and possibly a bit yeast. Cannot tell if this is Stone’s normal 007 (yeast) or not. Some pineapple, pine, and molasses. Very dry with a nutty roast. A clean and crisp finish. Lasting and strong bitterness that is a touch much. Nice malt complexity, grainy, bready, toasted, lightly rich without being too sweet. Overall good, and a bit old school and brash, but still a fun drink. Medium bubbles, lighter body, lasting bitter, pretty well hidden alcohol. Good.
