Bottle drunk at home after Greek lamb, whilst watching Nic Cage try to be old-timey Spidey. Dark brown beer, short-lived off-white head, with a definitely deep and smoky, malty nose. Really full flavor and mouthfeel, lots of smoke but not overpowering. Definitely meaty! Now that's a good Rauchbier.

Medium cream head over deep reddish brown beer. Heavy phenolic nose, tarr, smoke, brown bread & malts. Phenolic with a sourish touch, bit pharmaceutical. Gets gradually sweet(er). Bit mineral, almost salty. Not very well-bodied, light, very mild carbonation. Starts punch-in-the-face, ends almost tame.

Dutch Rauchbier, sampled at 3B in Sneek. Pale greyish white, slowly breaking, medium thick, small-bubbled head on a dark bronze-brown beer with ruddy hue. Aroma of ketchup and ‘smoky’ barbecue sauce (weirdly), ketjap even, caramel, smoked beef, bonfire ashes, fig jam, honey-glazed spareribs, tomato concentrate. Sweetish onset, clean with hints at fig and medlar, medium carbonated; smooth and rounded mouthfeel, caramelly malt sweet core with indeed a drying, umami-forward, meaty smokiness to it, almost horse steak-like and combining with the sweetness in, again, this very barbecue sauce-like overall effect. Ends with light herbal hop bitter accents, providing a bittersweet ending. Weirdly sweet for a Rauchbier, but admittedly the end result is a pleasant, even fun one, very reminiscent of smoked barbecue sauce from a flask. I like a good Rauchbier and this one at least is not afraid to be smoked enough, as is all too often the case, though for me it could have been even more.

Clear amber brown colour, tall frothy off-white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma smoked malt, smoked beef, bacon, light peaty notes. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, smoked malt, light bacon, some caramel, umami, retronasal smoke. Medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation, smoky maltbitter aftertaste, very pleasant rauchbier.

Bottle. Deep amber color. Beechwood in the aroma. Bready, fat malty flavor. Beechwood. Smoked speck. Well rounded. Hint of tobacco. Very nice, better as the old version.
