Zwaar Bier is a top-fermenting beer with a spicy flavor due to the addition of wintery herbs, but it tastes good throughout the year.

Bottle, gusher, really annoying. Brown color, big white head. Aroma of anise and coriander. Taste is spicey, with anise and cinnamon, but again with an unpleasent metallic note.

Bottle from trade with Bierkoning, many thanks! Klare orangebraune Farbe, geringe beige Schaumkrone. Geruch nach frischen Kräutern, sehr malzig. Geschmack sehr malzig, Lakritz, Kräuter, fruchtig, erfrischend, interessant!

Sampled @ PWBF Gouda 2014. Bottle. Clear red color, small beige head. Smell malts, sweetness and a lot of herbs or spices. Taste malts, herbs and spices, sweet. Quite well balanced, but not my thing at all. Medium body and carbonation.

Dunkelmalzige Kräuternoten, vollmundig. Nur geringfügig süß, dunkel bleibend, die harmonischen Kräuternoten steigern sich. Deutlich würzig, balanciert, niemals ist der Alkoholgehalt erkennbar. 11/12/12/11/8/12

Bottle. Aroma is anise, chocolate. Completely hazy brown colour. Taste is caramel with anise. Light bodied, smooth mouthfeel, easily drinkable. Interesting, tasty, if a bit strange. I like it.

33cl Bottle from Secret Sint, thanks! Dark brown colour, beige head. Aroma of lots of spices, mainly gale, aniseed, After Eight mints, a bit like cough syrup / Jopen Koyt, dark fruits, malts. Flavour is very spicy but also well-balanced imho, gale, aniseed, sweet dark malts, dark fruits, subtle spicy bitter finish with a hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied, sticky, light alcoholic, smooth carbonation. Surprisingly good beer, especially considering the unimaginative name. Also fits the S/H/V category imho. Earlier Rating: 1/25/2009 Total Score: 3.1Bottle at WBF ’09 Gouda. Amber brown colour, off-white head. Strong aroma of cough syrup, christmas spices, especially star anise and cinnamon. Flavour is sweet, very spicy, coughsyrup and cinnamon again, with a hint of anise in the finish. A bit on the thin side, but OK. Really spicy brew.

bottle from Edo. Hazy brown colour, creamy off-white to beige head. Malty-herbal nose. Full-bodied start, malty with a fruity touch and wintery spices. Lovely ale with a touch of Christmas pudding.
