Following century old recipes all malts made at the Schlenkerla brewery are dried by wood fire. While for the classic Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier traditionally beech has been ? and still is ? used, the malt for Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is kilned with oak wood. The resulting Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers for Christmas.

0.5 l bottle at Spicy Days, Zagreb. Had it years ago, never rated. Clear dark golden to amber, small off-white head. Nice moderately smoky aroma, smoked ham, smoked wood, quite mild, more like smoked rosemary wood. Mineral. Light grainy aroma underneath. Medium body, soft texture, slightly oily. A touch of metal, grain, soft smoke flavour. Some sweetness. Dry, nice oak presence. Light finish, light bitterness. Some warmth, alcohol otherwise hidden.

Bottle from Geers. Best before: 11/2021. Hazy dark red-brown, stable, foamy, yellowish beige head. Intense aroma of dried plum & banana, toasted chestnut, burnt wood, tyres, smoked BBQ sausage, bacon, butterscotch, clove, tree leaves, molasses, pistachio. Taste has sweet plum, pear & banana over a caramelly, nutty, brown-bready malt base with smoky-umami edges of sausage and wood. Herbal hoppy finish offering smoked wood, tobacco, dried fruit and soflty warming peated whisky-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Insane combination of Doppelbock and Rauchbier, the Rauchmalz is so intense and effective but the Bock structure is so strong. For now, the Urbock was even better (from memory), but this is also a note to myself to organise a side-by-side tasting once. In any case, world-class.

Copper color with medium beige head. Aroma: assertive smoke, bacon, red berries, honey, toffee. Taste: sweetish, honey malt than almost inmediately beech campfire appears, red berries ends with robust bitterness. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, moderate to high bitterness. Excellent sipper over the dark long nights. Brilliant

500ml bottle - Pours a clear coppery amber colour with a medium sized beige coloured head. The aroma is smoked ham, sweet malts, light caramel and a little fruit. A moderately sweet taste, caramel, sweet malts, dark fruit and smoked ham flavours with drying bitterness in a smoked finish.

Dunkles Doppelbock-Rauchbier mit sehr ordentlichen 8,0 % Alkohol und gewaltigen 19,9 % Stammwürze. Tief dunkelrote Farbe, recht klar. Relativ dunkler Schaum. Intensives, süßes Raucharoma in der Nase. Süßmalzig bereits im Antrunk, eine Millisekunde später kickt das Raucharoma massiv rein. Mehr als deutlich rauchig, aber tatsächlich weicher, runder und weniger nach Räucherspeck schmeckend wie beim normalen Schlenkerla Rauchbier. Das sollte davon kommen, dass hier Eichen- statt Buchenholz zur Räucherung verwendet wurde. Die bittere Note, die irgendwie immer mit dem Rauch mitkommt, ist aber auch hier vorhanden. Schwere, weiche Substanz - wie es sich für einen Doppelbock gehört. Mir etwas zu süß und es dürfte auch ein Hauch mehr Kohlensäure drin sein. Trotzdem: Ein extremes, aber auch gutes und vor allem hochinteressantes Bier. Das sollte man unbedingt mal probiert haben!
