Following century old recipes all malts made at the Schlenkerla brewery are dried by wood fire. While for the classic Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier traditionally beech has been ? and still is ? used, the malt for Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is kilned with oak wood. The resulting Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers for Christmas.

Dark brown and clear with lasting head. Really malty and smoky. Meaty elements. Good body. Lots of depth. Pairs well with stews and grilled meat.

Pours a deep reddish amber, fairly clear, with a thin white head, good lacing. Immediate aroma of wood smoke, hickory. Taste has a sweet malt base with a salty, savory, smoke flavor, kind of like a smoked meat. Palate has a continuation of that same smoked flavor that lingers on the nose for quite a while. Intense.

Bottle. Pours clear dark reddish chestnut with huge light brown head. Aroma is intense smokey with notes of smoked ham, fried bacon, campfire, cordage, dried fruit, malt and caramel. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Body is oily with medium carbonation. Finish is long, mostly sweet and intently smoked with notes of campfire, smoked meat, cordage, pepper and dried dark fruit. Very intense on the smoke - almost approaching nauseating.

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 8.0%. Clear chestnut to mahogany colour, large off-white head. Aroma of smoked malts and bonfires, but not quite as intense as I expected (or feared). The flavour has a moderate malty sweetness with some caramel, and distinct notes of smoked malts and smoked meat. Moderate hops.

500ml bottle from St Albans beer shop, St Albans, Herts. A dark amber/brown coloured pour with a healthy off white head on top which doesn't linger. Smokey, malty, caramel, meaty aroma and taste with a slightly bitter finish. Very good rauchbier as expected and I really like the green label on the bottle which is so Bavarian.
