Nice beige head and good black-brown body. Nice leather aroma. Flavour is sweet leather, molasses, chocolate syrup, sugar, beef jerky, very meaty and in your face. Well defined and balanced. Nice beer but a bit heavy and smoky. Worth a try if you like a good earthy smack in the face.

Bottle, BB 09.2016 (from alcostock). Pours dark brown with beige head. The huge head stays. Aroma is smoke, bacon, malt, black bread. Flavor is sweet and bitter, bacon, malt, caramel. Finish is sweet, bacon and dry bitter. Alcohol is well covered. Overall: great brew, but I may actually prefer märzen.

Marrón muy oscura, abundante espuma ocre, muy duradera, bonita. Estupendo aspecto. Aroma tremendo.

Bottle from Tanakaya shared with family for the holidays. Pours a deep brown with purplish shade on the edges. Stronger smoked aroma than the marzen: smoked ham and honey, charcoal, plum, oak, charred molasses, chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Slightly oily mouthfeel with average to soft carbonation. More fruit comes out as it warms giving it a holiday feel. Slightly sweet finish with more smoke.

Brown color with tan head. Aroma is smokey bacon. Taste is stingy first, then an excellently balanced combination of smoke and maltiness. Rich, but not sweet. A dream of a smoked beer. 8-4-8-4-17 Fresh 2016 Bottle, October 2016: I can appreciate Schlenkerla much more by now. What I wrote above is still correct - compared to the Märzen, it’s fuller, sweeter, creamier and chewier, but also a bit more ashes in the finish. It is exactly like you’d want a Schlenkerla bock to be, though. Also, full pours look better than small pours from bottle shares. Hopefully I’ll still make it to Bamberg for a gravity pour of this before they’re out again! 9-5-8-4-17Holzfass at Schlenkerla, November 2016. As expected, just even moreish. 9-5-9-4-17

Bottle, courtesy of SinH4. Looks like Coke with a stable foam. Aroma of German winter kitchen, a bit smoky, Brussel sprouts. Very bitter, nicely smoked taste. Definitely a winter beer, heavy and oily, but also a bit rough. Re-rate in 2017 from a 2014 vintage: Let's up this a bit. (3.8 to 4.2)
