From the blackest depths of the brewhouse comes Damien, Child of Darkness. Spawned from the usually discarded remnants of Darkness, Damien is a dry-hopped black ale with flavors of roasted malt and dark brown sugar. Tangerine and pine aromatics only add to its insidious appeal.

Surly Damien: child of darkness Black IPA 6.5% This beer is made with the second running’s of their famous brew Darkness. Deep brown with a thick tan head and roasty aroma with even elements of coconuts and tropical piña colada floral notes. Quite full bodied with roasty notes and a balancing hoppiness, silky mouthfeel and bitter chocolate in the finish. Really quite nice and suits the rainy weather.

16 ounce can. Barely translucent cola brown color. Dense, pillowy tan head. Cascading lace. Roasted malt aroma hints at brown sugar and milk chocolate. First sip is dark malt, bitter hops and dried citrus peel. Middle brings notes of charred wood, cardamom and licorice. Medium bodied. Dank scorched malt finish. Interesting.

2016 750 ml bottle, sent by Surly for review. My first beer after three weeks without, because of surgery. Opened on Halloween night. Yes, it goes pretty good with fun-sized chocolate bars. In case you were wondering. Pours a slightly spongy tan head above an opaque black body. No off colors from aging, so I lucked out. Smell is a lightly roasty malt, not much else on the side. Not too much hop stands out on the palate. The dry-hopped may have dwindled out a bit, but it still balanced the malt. It's a straight-up example of a Black IPA, which can interchange with the idea of a hoppy stout or porter. There a bit extra roast down the middle of the bottle, perhaps playing off some of my Halloween Chocolate.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head that leaves a pretty nice lace on the side of the glass. Aroma of toasted malt, light alcohol, citrus, pine and a lot of floral and grassy notes with a good hoppy punch and alpha acids coming through near the end. Medium-bodied; Strong pungent roasted malt flavour dominates up front with a lot of grassy and herbal hop flavours and some light citrus and cleanser flavours soon afterwards with a dash of grain and alcohol that shines through near the end. Aftertaste is well-balanced with a lot of roasted malts showing through at first with a good amount of hops and grapefruit, citrus and pine showing through the stronger malt and astringency. Overall, a nice crisp and robust complex set of flavours with the roasted malt stronger than the hops, but all showing well throughout with a dash of grain, caramelised sugars and bitterness, but the citrus and malt are the primary notes, in a good way. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased earlier in the day from Hy-Vee in Omaha (Papillion), Nebraska on 07-October-2019 for US$3,49 sampled in my hotel room her in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 07-October-2019.
