Autumn has often been associated with melancholy. The possibilities of summer are gone and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Keats was more optimistic in the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. We think likewise, although it may be wise to spend more time under cover with this comforting and rewarding red ale and remember after the gold of summer, comes the red of autumn.

Cask at the Stag and Hounds, Bracknell. Reddish chestnut with a loose translucent head; sour, malty aroma; soft, with malty, toffee flavour and a thin and watery body; and a biscuity finish. Rather ordinary.

Pint, from cask, shared with Finn at The Cockpit. Tiny layer disappearing over a clear, amber coloured body. Smell of leafy hops and nuts. Mid-sweet malts in flavour together mild, dried fruits. Modest dry, bittersweet finish. Easy to quaff. Alright (London, Halloween 31.10.2012).

Re-rating from cask at Haymarket. Lots of apple and toffee. Also a balanced if unexciting Palate. Worth a few extra points for sure. Previous rating on 21.11.11 =5+4+ 4+2+8=2.3 On draught at the Edinburgh University Library Bar. It’s a dark amber colour with a generous head. The nose is more malty than biscuity. The taste has initially a malty/creamy note but this continues into a burnt astringent malt taste on the end. The palate has a medium body and texture but as I was saying above, the finish is astringent rather than pleasant and refreshing. Overall, another typical beer from the Caley.

Cask-conditioned at the Staple Hill Oak (JDW), Bristol 16/11/10. Deep amber with a slight, off-white head. Oranges, caramel and a touch of earthiness, before a moderately bitter finish. Less sweet than expected and drinkable.

On tap at Hamilton Hall. Clear amber beer, residual white head. Tangy dried fruits with orange the most noticable. Finish is over dry with some mild bitterness kicking in. Inoffensive and drinkable.

Light copper colour. The aroma is...unclean...in that vomitous way which I take to be some kind of sulphur...or canned tomatoes? Watery, mostly bland palate. Chemically, unpleasant character. Not exactly a showpiece beer.

Cask på White Swan, Pimlico 7 Okt 10. Gyldenbrun. Lavt svakt farget skum. Lukt av karamell & litt blomster. Smaken er tynn med innslag av karamell. Litt tørr bitterhet i avslutninga.
