A thin tan head on a brown/black body. The nose is faint, with elements of coffee, oats and a hint of citrus hops. The taste is well rounded and roasty. There is medium bitterness coffee, lactose, a touch of chocolate and some earthy hoppiness. The body is quite rich for the ABV and the moderate carbonation is appropriate to the style. A nice middle of the road black IPA

Black pour, big mocha head. Light pine resin aroma, with a copious amount of roasted malt, and some coffee. Medium. Bitterness, not sure there is enough hop presence to make this a black ipa and not a hoppy American porter, but it’s still quite well done, and one of the better beers from this brewery that I’ve tried.

473 ml can from a LCBO in Ottawa. Real black in the glass, with a more than one finger frothy pale beige head. Hopy with some licorice and cat pee (sry ...) on the nose. Taste is crisp hopy, licorice, dark malty, hopy bitterness, later adding some citrus elements. Really nice.

Keg at Big Rig Brewery, Ottawa. Near black with rich creamy head. Chocolate, tar and citrus up front. Mid sweet with medium-full body and dense, rounded mouthfeel. Caramel, chocolate and licorice. Tarry bitter finish.

Tasting at Matt’s, can
Dark brown color. Roasted malt and caramel aroma, hint of good coffee. There is some residual sugar, but the roastiness wins, quite aggressive, a bit too much in the final. Not bad.

473ml bottle at Matt’s. Pours a very dar brown with a beige head. Aroma is piney hops, burnt malt, slightly earthy. Taste is strong piney bitterness, burnt malt, with smokey notes. Quite aggresive, but not bad.
