The word vulpine means "like a fox." Here, we’re referring to the deep, reddish hues of Obscura Vulpine, a beer brewed especially for barrel aging. What goes into the wood as rich, malty, and ruby-colored, comes out a complex, sour, garnet ale. With notes of dried tart cherries, red currants, and oak, this is a beer as artful as our favorite forest canine.

Bottled 2016. Thought I had lost this but was just hiding in the beer fridge. Strong strong oak funk nose almost smokey. Great red tart flavor. Smooth and dry.

T42 tasting on me Birfaday. Hazy amber beer, thin pale tan head. Palate is light, dry and has decent fine carbonation. Nice light sourness tempered by a light candy sherbet. Tart dried fruits. Winey tang. LIght finish. Tasty and easy drinking.

Bottle shared at the level 42 tasting 7/9/2016. Many thanks to Kenny for this one. A dirty hazed reddy amber coloured pour with a sticky halo of beige head. Aroma is sour, funky lacto, caramac bar, spicy apple, sweet malts. Flavour is composed of puckering sour woody, tangy, granny Smith apple, grainy . Seriously sour. Rough round the edges. Palate is super sour, moderate carbonation, tangy, grainy. Meh.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Kenworth. Pours unclear ruby with a creamy, off-white head. The nose has lots of acetic bite, ripe berries, lemon. Light sweet flavour with notes of leather, lemon juice, light vinegar, berries, drying wood. Light to medium bodied with spritzy carbonation. Acetic finish, somewhat burning, with more lemon, leather, wood. Novel.

Bottle thanks to the birthday boy. It pours hazy deep red - brown with a small beige head. The aroma is vinous, tangy, balsamic vinegar, red berry skin, funky, vanilla, toasted coconut and fruit pie. The taste is dry, tart, woody, vinous, some acidity, red berry, sherbet, Granny Smith apple, celery and wood with a drying, milky astringent finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. I like elements of, but it is a bit rough and ready.

Bottle split at Level 42, thanks to Kenny, 07/09/16. Lightly hazed amber with a reddish glint, topped with a decent beige head. Nose is tangy dark fruits, vinous, spice, varnish, light vinegar strokes. Taste comprises soured fruits, spice, fruit balsams, vinegar notes, acidic, oaky wood pissoi, stewed fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close, rising acidic bite and a puckering finale. Ok but lacks complexity.

375 c&c from Final Gravity. Pours coppery brown with a transient beige head. Aroma of tart cherry and wood. A little acidic. Med body or so. Flavor is tart cherry and wood, and it’s followed by a definite oxidation flavor. I’m betting it’s from a musty barrel. I like oxidation in moderation, but for those who don’t it’s likely to be off putting. Finishing tartly astringent. Cherry might really be other red berry. Quite nice IMHO.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Slightly funky, some cola and dark cherry. Deep reddish-brown with taupe head that lingers. Dark fruit, cherry. Nicely sour. Moderate dry finish. Not terribly complex.
