Dark and mysterious. This malty/hoppy American lager is bound for “the gateway of the mouth”. Mount Hood and Cascade hops splash across your tongue like a rainy day on the high road. Take a walk on the dark side.

Hackney Bottleshare. Thanks to Leighton. Clear deep amber beer, small yellowish tan head. Palate is smooth and has just modest carbonation. Thin tangy dark malts, oxidised. Tangy ripe fruits. Tangy finish. Still some flavour here but the beer is clearly very tired.

Bottle shared in London - picked up somewhere in London a few years ago. Pours clear ruby with a bubbly, off-white head. The nose holds dried, leathery berries, toasted malts. Light sweet flavour with subtly tangy, leathery berries, some wood, damp earth. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with some leafy bitterness, more old leather. So so overall.

Bottle from Wine Cellar Sanderstead. It pours pretty much black with a decent beige head. The aroma is roasted malt, toast, mild sweetness, plain chocolate, earth and light umami. The taste is smooth, toast, roasted malt, light spice, brown bread, cacao nib, earth and touch of berry skin with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent enough for the style, but no game-changer.

Cask gravity at Reading Beer Festival 2015. Cola colour clear lasting beige head. some toffee and roast malt on the aroma. Reminds me mostly of a dark mild with a bit of caramel. It’s OK. Bit toffee is for me. Light condition. Some sting on the finish. OK but not my style of beer.

50cl Bottle from Beer Boutique. Dark brown colour, thin light-beige head. Aroma is fruity, dark fruits, malty, some jam, light roast, hint of hops. Flavour is medium sweet, light yeasty, dark fruits, light roasted malts, light hoppy bitter finish. Light bodied. Comes closer to a mild than a schwarz imo. OK-ish.
