Solemn Black is the Galway Bay take on the Black IPA style. Brewed with six different malts and the most dank, resinous hops known to man. The flavour is mouth coating piney, resinous hops, some pleasant coffee notes and a solid malt backbone to almost balance it all.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is roasted malt, piney hops, chocolate, pine resin, fruity notes incl. grapefruit, with a touch of coffee. Flavour is moderate sweet with a long bitter finish. Above medium bodied. Roasty and quite bitter with piney hops and chocolate, a fine specimen.

Keg @ The Brew Dock, Dublin before catching my ferry back to blighty. Pours dark, large off-white head. Piney hop and roast greets on the nose. Continues to taste, big pine presence alongside a solid roast backdrop. Nicely flavoursome. Solid DIPA,

440 ml can shared with my gf. Pours thick and black with a fine head - looks like an imperial stout. Aroma is spot on black IPA. Chocolate malt and light roasty notes are net by herbal hoppiness. Some chocolate, some blueberries, some pine and especially pine needles. Lovely. Medium big body. Thickish mouthfeel. Flavour is malty sweet, surprisingly sweet actually, with an intense bitterness. The sweetness balances this out nicely though. Really hoppy, but really more on the pine and forest side, with herbal notes, blueberries and again pine needles. No longer finish, but what is there is bittersweet and dryish. A lovely black IPA. I'm biased as this is one of my favourite styles, but this is really just spot on - a lovely rendition of the style.

Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Airy palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, semi sweet, little dark malt cream. Modest citric fruits and very soft pine. Little dark fruits and spice on the finish. Soft but with an edge. Decent.

330ml bottle. Pours black with a thick dense beige head. Aroma of roast malts, loads of piney hops, coffee. Taste has a nice roasted malt base, coffee, big piney hops, resinous, some tropical fruit, caramel, moderate bitterness. Medium body, soft carbonation. A really nice, well balanced black IPA and dangerously easy drinking for 9%.

Keg @ Salt House, Galway [011217]
A4, N7, T7, P4, O15
Pitch black, tan head
Aroma - lots of hops, bit piney, zest, no stout notes
Taste of zesty hops, hop resins, getting a hint of that US caramel, piney, soft dark malts underneath, getting dark toffee
Palate - Medium carb, full body, quite bitter hops, sweet background, bit sticky. Finish of sweet sticky dark malts, sticky bitter hop resins
Overall - Rich beer, much more IPA than stout
