Inspired by SIBA's Wheat Beer challenge in 2001 we produced a 4.8% ABV beer using 40% Wheat Malt and 60% Malted Barley. To underline the continental heritage of this beer we uncharacteristically brewed with choicest Hallertau hops from Germany. This award winning brew has been described as 'wheat and sweet'. It is light in colour with a moreish dry palate.

Cask at the Royal Oak, Borough. It pours clear deepish amber with a small, bubbly white head. The nose is earthy, bitter-sweet, cereal, spicy action, toffee, dusty basement, apple pie and clove rock. The taste is bitter, wood, grassy notes, spicy hops, caramel, cereal, wheaten bread, banana bread and apple with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Way better than the bottled version. Quaffable stuff.

Bottle from Harvey’s online. Appearance - amber with a decent fluffy head. Nose - very delicate banana. More malt than expected. Taste - more of the same. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy yet creamy texture and a fairly dry finish. Overall - solid if not true to the style.

Bottle from Middle Farm. It pours clear amber with a medium, foamy white head. The nose is toasty, wheat, brown bread, cereal and earth. The taste is bitter, earthy, toasty, mouldy bread, must, weetabix, earth and grassy hops with a drying finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Can’t say I love the style. Smells decent, but lacks some punch in the flavour department.

50cl bottle picked up in Hastings. Amber-gold in colour with a fast fading cream head; the aroma has German hops, some light coriander spice and some musty grains; unfortunately the taste is a bit of a let down - stewed, slightly lactic, malts; then a rather sticky caramel finish. Probably a lot better as a cask ale!

Cask at the Royal Oak, London. Hazy, golden coloured ale with a reasonable head. Wheaty, malty, citrus, banana aroma and taste. Refreshing, slightly sweet. Nice beer, especially after 4 pints of it.

Cask handpull at Royal Oak, London. Odd cereal, orange-y citrus flavour on this one. A bit like a tangerine with a woody flavour to it. A bit like a wooden box of oranges. Some clove spice. Bit of juicyness from the malt. Didn’t like it at first, but it grows on me. Good strongish bitter.
