First brewed in England, these potent, malty monsters were frequently aged before being put into small bottles and sold as strong beers or even medicinal tonics. The American version has been blown up with more alcohol, larger bottles and more hops.
Smuttynose Barleywine straddles these two branches of the barleywine tree. When you taste it, you’ll notice deep, rich caramel malt flavors, balanced with hop bitterness. Fruity hop flavors act as a garnish for its amped-up but classic flavor. For a more refined experience, tuck a few bottles away for a year or two. The alcohol will mellow and the hop aromas will fade into the background, leaving the luscious malt to shine on its own.

Bottle at Fastelavn Smagning 2014 @ J&C’s beer palace, Jutland Saturday Session 2 - 01/03/14. Lightly hazed orange amber with moderate off white spotting. Nose is bitter orange, dark fruit pangs, hoppy backwafts, spice, bitter grapefruit and tropicana. Taste comprises caramelised sugars, punchy tropical fruit pangs, dark fruits, sugars, hops. Fullish bodu, fine carbonation, sweet close with light booze. Ok US style hopped up barley wine, hides the ABV well and not overly sweet, never going to come out top in class for style with all the hops and tropicals banging about, akin to double/triple IPA.

Pours deep amber with a large and thick head. Sweet and malty aroma of marshmallows, dried fruit and brown sugar. Sweet and malty flavor with notes of dried fruit, hops and alcohol. Bitter finish. Quite ok, but just a liiiiiiitle bit too strong for its own good.

Bottle, 22oz. Nice lacings left from the off-white to light beige head. Unclear amber colored body. Quite malty aroma, with a nice piney and citrusy hoppyness. Nice bitterness in the mouth, dealing with the crystal malts. Full body and soft carbonation. Lasting finish with a nice bitterness. It’s sure a nice one, but I think it’s a bit on the sweet side. The alcohol is present but not annoying in any way. 140214

Bottle - Hazy amber in colour. Leather, toffee and dried fruit in the aroma. Malty and fruity taste with maple syrup, raisins and walnuts detected. Not as good as I was hoping it would be.
