Dark Ale Blend with Coffee, Chocolate and Vanilla Aged in Bourbon Barrels
Complex and chimerical, this blend of dark ales has rested in freshly seasoned bourbon barrels selected from our southbound neighbors at New Riff Distilling. Uncoiling from oaken slumber, Mushhushshu exhales notes of chocolate, toasted vanilla, toffee and dark fruit—spry splendor time-tempered into mellow malt majesty.

500ml bottle from Tavour. Bottle labelled as being aged in mixed barrels. Cellared. Near black pour, patchy beige head, ring of foam. Aroma is coffee, roasty malts and chocolate. Taste is sweet, coffee fades, chocolate and cola notes, vanilla highlights. Body seems thin, but all else is spot on.

2020 sample at Shelter pours a leggy, opaque black with a ring of beige head. Nose has a lot of caramel and booze and cocoa, licorice, molasses, nougat. Flavor has molasses and cocoa and caramel and some toffee nuts, something vinous, red wine lees. Barrel is present but very complimentary. Full bodied with some heat but pretty damn smooth too.

Capped 500 from Tavour at 11.6%. Pours dark brn/blk with a creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon, vanilla. Toasted/burnt malt. Full bodied. Heat is present, but not an issue. Bourbon. Chocolate. Vanilla. Smooth burnt malt. Notes of wood astringency. Not dry, but it seems rather that way. Not at all sugary. Burnt malt bitter. Hints of plum. And dates. Clearly not a stout. Whiskey is ever present. Very good flavor.

Sampled on draft at Tapped this beer poured a black color with a small foamy tan head that left no lacing. The aroma was herbal, sourish and funky with a bit of anise. The flavor was malty and sourish with anise, carob, chickory, other vague herbs and alcohol. Very long herbal finish. Moderately full bodied.

Tap at Mellow. Pours a deep brown to black with some light purple highlights and basically no head. Roasted coffee, chocolate and prune aromas are there but the bourbon character shines through. Body seems a touch thin and carbonation a bit low. Lots of woody, bourbon notes with some faint vanilla. More chocolate. Kind of straightforward, but still a fun beer. Finish is a little hot.

Pretty well balanced considering the huge amount of barrels. Roast, lots of caramel and some oak. Dark chocolate. Creamy consistency. A little booze. Good but wouldn’t drink a lot of this. Sweet finish with some oak astringency. Tap at Churchkey.
