Scotch-Style Ale

So good it’s almost wrong. Dark ruby in color and brewed with seven varieties of imported malts. Complex in finish, with hints of smoke and peat, paired with a malty richness and a right hook of hop power to give it the bad attitude that a beer named Dirty Bastard has to live up to. Ain’t for the wee lads.

355ml bottle. Pours a clear dark ruby with a large, frothy, long lasting, tan head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, chocolate, dried fruit, licorice and brown sugar. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, chocolate, overripe fruit, licorice, molasses and a hint of peat in a dry, slightly boozy finish. Medium to full body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty, an excellent scotch ale.

Pours unclear dark brown with a red glow. Small white head. Smell is caramelly malts, intense, but with a certain subtile intensity. Taste is full, mild butteryness ( allowed in the style ) bit caramely, dark bread delivered from the malts. Mild walnutty flavors in the back. Creamy mf. Not too much carbo.

12 oz bottle poured. I actually think I picked this one up while traveling, before Founders made it to the PNW. Super excited to have it finally, then it showed up everywhere around here. Oh well, same great beer. Dusty, dark brown pour with a tan cream foam head. Sweet and spicy malt aroma. Toasty malt, a light charred wood note, balanced by the slightest hint of vanilla/cream. A pleasant, easy drinking scotch ale here. Bold almost smokey linger. Exceptional for the style.

On tap at Hippo Glasgow. Dark red/brown beer, off-white head. Light malty, fruit scent. Taste is rich malt, apple, citrus, dried fruit, toffee. Light, tangy aftertaste that gets a bit sickly as you go through it. The taste of alcohol is more than I’d like but otherwise it’s nice.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, ruby brown colour with a beige medium-sized foamy head. Slightly syrupy nutty malty aroma with notes of caramel, chocolate, dried fruits, vanilla and a touch of alcohol. Sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied with a smooth, well-carbonated mouthfeel. Initially dark and nutty malt with notes of caramel, dried fruits, chocolate and drying herbal-spicy hops kicking in from the middle part, lingering into the balanced dark malty and hop bitter finish with a whiff of smoke, vanilla and a warming alcoholic strength. Pleasant. 25.IV.17

Superb scotch ale. Pronounced scotch flavors melt together with a well balanced malt backbone. Balanced sweet bitterness
