On tap at a restaurant. Pours gold orange. Corn, vegetables, sulfur, sharp overacidic stuff. Harsh body. Unpleasant.

Bottle at The Hare, Old Redding, near Harrow Weald. This venue is part of a chain ((White Brasseries) that is yet another attempt by yet another TV chef (in this case Raymond Blanc) to get into the flourishing gastropub market. Now, Monsieur Blanc may be a wonderful chef (I've been to his Quatre Saisons and his food was top-notch), but he clearly has no idea of what a British gastropub (let alone a pub) should be like. This, therefore, is actually a restaurant, with the attendant over-inflated prices - but unfortunately a low-grade restaurant, with sub-standard service, below-par food, and a dull, dull beer list. This meant that the only new rate available to me was this travesty of a macro lager. It's a dull deep yellow colour with a half-hearted fizz and a negligible white head. It tastes of - well, very little actually. My wife described it as "gone off water". For me there was some damp cardboard and a hint of sweetcorn. It's thin in body and ultimately drab, disappointing and over-priced; so possibly a perfect match for the White Brasseries (although the bottle the beer came in was far uglier than the rather nice old building that the restaurant is in). Overall a terrible beer in a terrible venue; I hope Monsieur Blanc's misguided gastropub venture fails and this becomes a decent independent pub run by people who actually care about their customers.

Can in Cardiff, San Diego. Pours clear yellow-gold with a foamy, white head. Pretty basic pale lager, some bread crust, grain husk, grass, cereal, straw. Light bodied, average carbonation. Simple finish, some dough, hay. Very basic.

Surprisingly, it was actually not awful. Carbonated and pale it looks and smells like a Corona. Definite bread notes. Tastes kind of like a pilsener. For a cheap beer...not too bad.
