FUYU (meaning “Winter” in Japanese). The first of our winter warmers series. Rich malt sweetness but still relatively dry for the style. Story telling’ hoppiness that kicks at first sight but ends up balancing your whole drinking experience. Robust but you’ll likely go on ordering a second glass!

On tap at Spacecraft in Sudbury Ontario. Dark brown pour, with a small beige head. Aroma is sticky, thick resinous hops, with a big caramel, and toffee malt backbone. Mouth feel is full, carb is well balanced. Finish is slightly fruity, sweet candied pine resins, light fruit, big notes of caramel and toffee. Reminds me of old school barley wines. I'm assuming the low ratings were from an infected batch, this was really quite nice.

Poured from 355mL can (pkg 22/Dec/2022; thanks mom & Char). Hazy orangey brown with small off white head. Woody, a bit boozy, caramel malt, tons of resin, quite harsh. Needs to smooth out the edges.

Draught @ Randolph Beer - DUMBO (4/28/19). Murky dark brown with red highlights, large creamy beige head, faint caramel aroma, low carbonation, bitter caramel taste, thin body, long bitter finish. Bitter.

Got in a trade with Coronaeus. 12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 12/10/2018. Pours very hazy/cloudy dark ruby red/brown color with a 1 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, raisin, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread dough/crust, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, raisin, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread dough/crust, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery, light roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, raisin, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread dough/crust, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and fairly sticky/resinous/rindy mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.5%. Overall this is a fantastic American barleywine! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV, with the mellowly bitter/resinous/drying finish; not overly aggressive. Feels like Columbus, Centennial, and Amarillo. Super juicy and fairly dank/earthy hops; with balanced fruity yeast, and rich dark/bready malts. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering resin dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing spot on style example. Very similar to Bigfoot, but less aggressively resinous/drying.

Can from the brewery. Cloudy brown with a low head. Piny, woody nose, bread, raisins. Complex and unique. Dry and resiny flavor, with caramel, apricot, raisins, but very low sweetness. Hugely hoppy and resiny, with notes of chocolate, caramel, rye bread. Some dankness from the hops as well. This is the driest barley wine I have ever tried. Unique as hell, and definitely not easily approachable but I like it.

Can shares by KL. Godspeed Fuyu Barleywine 9.5% Lovely amber brown color with a big malty sweet tea like aroma. Medium bodied with a very dry finish. The taste is ultra green bitter herbal hops, so dank and resiny but nice malt character balanced it out. After a year... Godspeed Fuyu Barleywine 9.5% Clear amber orange/brown with a thick beige head and a fragrant green herbal hop bouquet but enough malt character to balance it out. This van is a year old but super smooth, medium to full in body with a dry finish. The taste is a bit more US than UK barleywine so if you want less hops sit on it a bit longer. All in all a great beer. Boost it to 3.9

Medium brown color. tons of burnt raisins, chocolate plums, resins, very bitter. Way too dry for the style, but full body. A bit odd and not really my thing. \

Can: Poured a clear copper color ale with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry caramelized malt notes with some green hoppy notes also noticeable. Taste is a nice mix of dry caramelized malt notes with some dry green hops notes with some grainy cereal notes also noticeable. Body is somewhat below average with good carbonation. Enjoyable beer but I would have preferred a bit more residual sugar with some tone-down hops notes.
