Outside of weizen, altbier is one of the only traditional ales left in Germany. Our take on this ancient style leans hoppier than the average Dusseldorfer’s, but still sits squarely within the style. Dark fruit, and faint but fragrant citrus characterize the subtle nose, while the flavour hints at dark rye bread, gentle caramel, and fruit skins. Extremely clean and clear, Oberkassel wraps its soft flavours in a firm but friendly bitterness, fading gracefully from your palate between sips. Understated but secretly quite complex.

Tap at the source. Dark brown, yet clear pour, with a large off white head. The aroma is nutty, slightly yeast, and lots of cereals. Mouth feel is crisp, and fantastic, the finish is a perfect balance of grassy hops and malty cereals.. Slightly nutty, grassy, dry, crisp and so clean.. Outstanding example of the style.

Poured from 355mL can (thanks Nico; pkg 19 June 2023). Lightly hazed medium dark brown with small beige head. Muted rye malt character with grassy hop bitterness. Decent.

355mL can, pours a deep dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out dark rye bread, a little caramel, and bready malt. Flavour is dry, with plenty of dark rye bread, dry caramel, some bitterness, and bready malt. Thicker and richer than a true Dusseldorfer alt and amply bitter -- but there's no metallic issue that a lot of those have. Pretty nicely done.

Can: Poured a clear brown color altbier with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with light cereal notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also a mix of dry caramelized malt notes with some clear cereal notes and a semi-dry finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. Easy drinking with right amount of cereal and caramelization for the style.

Can from the brewery, It’s crystal clear mahogany brown with a thick creamy beige foam. The aroma has caramel biscuits but also a fragrant pine forest like hoppiness. Fairly full bodied and smooth but dry. The taste is bitter caramel but smooth while that dryness really primes you for your next sip. A banging sltbier which is a rare thing.

Can from the brewery, Jan 2, 2019. Beautiful amber-orange, clear, with a thick, low head. Toasty malt nose, some caramel, touch of cacao, bread. Nice malt flavor, bready, toasty, light roast. Very dry after a touch of sweetness, the clean, bitter, dry finish is quite intense a la Uerige. Peppery and a bit woody. Smooth, silky body.A rather dry, bitter interpretation but quite good.

Tap at the brewery, 8th July 18. Pours a chestnut beer, and clear. Aroma is caramel, bitter fruit. Taste is bitter, caramel, burnt sugar. It's clean, refreshing, reminds me of Germany, really good. What a great place.
