Rooted in West Coast convictions of resourcefulness and persistence, the California Common was born out of the Gold Rush of 1848. Even back when brewing equipment was scarce beer enthusiasts were unwilling to put their craft on hold. Making do with less, inventive brewing techniques led to the creation of a hybrid lager and ale. Out of necessity the brewmasters became partial to using the Pacific air as a cooling system and sourced hops locally. So it goes, this beer came to be apart of the cultural identity among the working class in the late 19th century. This style was widely known to satisfy an insatiable thirst after a long day of work as they built the foundations for life in the West as it stands today. Distinguished in breweries at the time by using copious amounts of local hops and very high carbonation.

Traversing a little further North here in wooded British Columbia our beer serves the very same purpose. Easy on the alcohol content and weighing in on taste for a complete balance. Utilizing Northern Brewer hops lends a hint of evergreen traditional to style. A fruit like quality is created by fermenting the lager at ale temperatures. Gaining a complex taste through subtle approach; hints at a full-bodied ale yet retains a crisp finish.

355ml can. Pours a clear copper with a small, foamy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves soapy curtains of lace. Mild aroma of bready caramel malt and floral hops. Sweet flavour of biscuity pale malt, caramel, toffee and grassy hops in a dry, bitter finish. Light body with a watery texture and average to soft carbonation. Well balanced. Not bad.

Draft: Poured a light amber with off white head. Aroma is grain. Taste is light grain. Refreshing.

Tap at the brewery. Clear amber-orange with a low head. Toasty malt nose, grassy, some caramel. toasty caramel flavor, dry, nice peppery hop bitterness, bready. A bit too sweet but decent.

At the source: pours amber with super foamy head. Aroma is caramel malt with a fair bit of hoppiness. Taste is lightly bitter. Malty. Sessionable and easy to drink. Good.

Great copper body and modest head, very faint grain aroma but really it is too faint to tell. Nice malty flavour with no intrusion. Medium finish. A good sessionable brew.

Draft. Amber beer with a cream head. Light malt aroma. Mineral and light malt flavor. Medium bodied. Mineral and light malt lingers.

Part of a flight at the brewery/taproom on Thursday June 18, 2015.Clear deep copper oxide color, teal head. Malty, dry, grainy taste. Grainy, dry, husky aftertaste. Fizzy mouthfeel, high bitterness. Malty, grainy taste.
