This beer's roots are in Belgium, and the classic Wit biers produced by Belgium's brewers. The style gets its name from the white, milky appearance of this unfiltered wheat ale. The brewers of Samuel Adams® beer, taking inspiration from the Belgians, have created a classic of their own. On the malt side, we use malted two row Pale barley, malted wheat, and Munich malt to give this beer a crisp, malty, cereal finish and smooth mouth feel. The hops used are Noble Tettnang Tettnanger hops. At the end of the kettle boil, we add a proprietary spice blend to give Samuel Adams® White Ale a unique and complex flavor, without being overpowering or cloying. The spice blend includes orange and lemon peel, dried plum, grains of paradise, coriander, anise, hibiscus, rose hips, tamarind, and vanilla. It is this special blend of spices that gives Samuel Adams® White Ale its unique character, complexity and refreshing drinkability. The beer is coarse filtered, leaving a white haze from the malt proteins. Our proprietary top fermenting ale yeast ferments the beer, imparting its signature character - bright and slightly fruity.

Bottle. This was a good beer. But, it is a slightly water downed, americanized version of a good belgian white ale. I do however like it. A little cloudy, nice aroma and good flavor. I would highly recommend this one several times. This years’ lot is about gone but I think this would be a great summer time brew.

Tall Can: (w/ Nitro Widget)........I just really enjoy saying nitro widget...ahem....on to the rate... Cloudy, yellow-gold with a creamy white head. Orange and wheat aroma. Flavour is mild, and a bit flat...maybe due to the creaminess of the nitro....orange and wheat malts... Creamy, malty, but lacking in zest or bite.....pleasant enough, but nothing more.

On tap at a bar in Leesburg, VA. Hazy gold with a decent, white, head. Orange peel and coriander, some yeasty grains and a gentle finish. Ok.

Pours cloudy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, wheat and orange peel. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long wheat and fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the brewery tour, as Nitro Wit. It’s a hazy, pale golden beer with a dense white head. The aroma is of the fruity kind, with some banana and spiced notes. It’s medium bodied, quite carbonated and dry. Banana, lemon, spices and pale malts in the flavor, some bitterness. Lasting finish. A decent beer indeed, but rather standard. 150608

Old rating. Bottle from 2006. Lots of spice, pepper and wheat on the nose. Very spice forward and peppery on the palate. A bit of citrus as well. Not bad.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was foggy, slightly golden colored body with a thin white head that only lasted about a couple seconds.
The smell had some hops, lemon, orange, tangerine combined in an earthy sort of way.
The taste was bittersweet through citrus and hops.
The palate was about a medium, slightly sessionable, citrusy aftertaste, sticky finish.
Overall, good for a witbier, uh . . . only decent to me, unsure if I’d come back to ....?

July 2009: Brown 12oz bottle, part of a six pack, poured into a Corsendonk badged, stemmed tulip glass. Cloudy haze (just like it says on the bottle neck label), dirty yellow/golden colour, good firm white head. Plenty of bubbles rising through the body. Spicey mix aroma, corriander, lemon and pink grapefruits. Keen and sharp in the mouth, well carbonated and fairly dry to taste. The taste follows the smells to the letter, a sweet and sour feel from the grapefruit and lemon mixture, the spices adding a little extra to the run of the mill white beers out there. The taste and aroma sweeten as the beer warms. The 5.2ABV is hidden well, but it does lack a body strength which would put it up there with the top white beers. Another Samual Adams beer I’ve enjoyed.
