14/6/2025. Can from Yutaka Shop Online. Pours clear deep maroon brown with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is jammy, dark fruits, malted, fruit loaf, blackberry, touch of black treacle and molasses. Moderate body, quite smooth, average carbonation. Enjoyed this.

Can from Yutaka, London. It pours dark brown to black with a small khaki head. The aroma is roasty malts, toasty, earthy, coffee grounds, dull charred vibes, malt loaf, touch of molasses, pencil shavings and nut. The taste is crispy, dry roast, bitter - sweet, toasty grains, coffee grounds, plain chocolate, raisin, fruit loaf and cola with a toasty finish. Average body and carbonation. Rounded and easy going.

(Can) Clear deep brown with good dense, but short lived, tan head. Subtle toasty, slightly nutty aroma. Light body, reasonable carbonation, a little thin on the mouthfeel. Taste is a little thin and watery, but ok. There’s backbone of burnt sugar, dark roast notes; there’s some sourness at the start which gives way to some hints of toffee sweetness later. Drinkable, not great.

33cl can from Midori, Nagano. Pours clear dark mahogany coloured with an off-white head. Mild roasty aroma with dark fruits, raisins, caramel and hints of wood and candy. Medium sweet with mild flavours and not much bitterness to speak of. Fairly drinkable, but nothing to write home about.

Can from Family Mart. Drank straight from the can. Caramel, toffee light chocolate and roasted malt on the nose. Taste is lightly roasty with more corn than I’d like to taste. Can from Takashimaya. Nose is of chocolate, nuts, caramel, slight roast, and some soy. Quite nice, actually. Very dark brown with orange tints and a medium, fine head. Somewhat more roasted flavor, wood, coffee, light chocolate. Body is rather light. Not as rich as the nose. A bit corny too. Not terrible, but why do they use all those adjuncts? Would be much nicer as a Reinheitsgebot schwarzbier. Still, possibly the best of a mediocre lineup of beer.
