355ml can @ Tokyo. Pours dark orange with a small head. Aroma of caramely malts, pine, earthiness, citrus and grass. Taste is earthy, slightly grassy and grainy with some pine and citrus. Finish is earthy and grainy with some grassy notes. Decent.

Blue bottle from Daiei supermarket. Drank straight from the bottle. Skunky nose with some bread and cracker notes along with peach some stone fruit. Light pissy grass aroma as well. Unbalanced with a skunky aftertaste. I guess there was some hop bitterness in there. Dumped the bottle after half. --- Beer merged from original tick of American Pale Ale on 01 Oct 2015 at 18:43 - Score: 3

I guess this one is called "American" because it is supposed to be hopper compared with their usual Pale Ale. We’ll see. Pours hazy and muddy dark orange. Head is quite nice, and even stays for a bit. Aroma is yes, maybe they have put a bit more hops in there, relatively fresh but still barely covering it’s malty-toffee body. Taste is interesting, first some green apple, hop bitterness kicks in, toffee and dark fruits. Finishing up in a long bready aftertaste subdued into a lingering bitterness. Overall, feels murky and not balanced - but has it’s charm while unpolished and rough.

For the 4th of July, I thought I’d start with. Japanese version of an American Pale Ale recently released by Ginga Kogen in cans & widely available for 280 yen or so from Yamaya. 5.5% it pours a beautiful orange gold with a thick light beige head which leaves behind no lacing. Mild citrus, pine aroma with some fruitiness probably due to West Coast hops. The flavor is a slight caramel, lemon, sweetness with a dry mild bitter finish. Nice mouthfeel. Not bad but sweeter & with more grain/malt flavor than I’d expect from an APA. Worth a try.

Got this hard to find can from Kabutomushi. Dark, very cloudy orange-amber, low head disappearing quickly. Nice aroma of citrus hops and rich caramel malts, bit of chocolate and peaches. Flavor is thick and rich, yeasty and fruity wwith decent bitterness. Still malt dominated, but better thaj their regular PA. Drinkable stuff.
