This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85

Big citrus hop nose, dark malts pretty subtle in the background. Medium brown with a bubbly head. Chocolatey, bit of alcohol, dash of roast, touch of woody, citrusy hop. Good, balanced example.

Bottle @ home, picked up @ Argonaut in Denver last week. Pours a black appearance with a soft, creamy, brown head. Really piney and resiny hoppy nose. Definitely some tropical fruit and grapefruit mixed in there as well with the roast and burnt malts. Kind of creamy mouth feel. Flavor is full of pineapple, grapefruit, and juicy tropical fruits which is a bit odd when in combination with the burnt, roasty, chocolate malts. Moderate sweetness. Moderate to high bitterness. Twangy finish. Pretty fucken strange brew though not completely unenjoyable.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours near black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of roasted malts, musty dark grains and some earthy pine hops. Flavor is similar with a good amount of earthiness, dark grains, roasted malts and a bit of pine bitterness.

Deep rich dark brown coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of strong, pungent hops, resin, pine and alcohol, all with bunches of roasted malt and some very nice tropical fruits, somehow! Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt at first that fades to a very nice hop flavour of tropical fruits and resin, all with a large hop bitterness at the end and a perfect balance of malt. Aftertaste shows a good balance but even better hoppy finish that has some sweetness as well. Overall, a great Black IPA that is the epitome of the style - hops everywhere, but a great balance of malt and a very strong complexity. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington, Virginia (Clarendon) on 09-March-2014 for US$8.99 sampled at home in Washington on 28-March-2014.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown with reddish hints to the edges, head was two finger thick fluffy tan to light brown. Aroma is juicy hops, very fresh. Taste is big bold hops bitter front with a roasted coffee and malt balance. Nice spicy finish to the tongue.

Tap at 23 Beerz. Nice citrus nose, very light chocolate and licorice. Dull black with a low, fine head. Roasty chocolate flavor, light coffee, citrus, oranges. Quite nice. Soft, full, and smooth.

Almost pitch black color with dark brown head. Fantastic nose of coffee, chocolate and citrus. Really good roasty backbone with moderately aggressive hops. Nice balance. I prefer a bit more hop character but nonetheless it was great. Big lingering finish of dark chocolate and coffee with hops just lingering and lingering. Good stuff.
