Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been
brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks
subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their
blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing.
21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to
develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop
fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s
Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous
desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Can from Malt & Vine. Pours dark amber with a huge foamy tan head. Smells a bit like wet dog - plus caramel and odd bits. Not funk, but related. Or could be fig. Medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is fruit of the medium dark type, with caramel, wood and some floral hop. Weird and wild stuff. Yet strangely mellow. There should be more beers like this. Almost develops chocolate in the finish. Ends a bit sweet, but that’s fair Belgian. It’s fair growin on me. I’d drink this anytime.

On tap at Churchkey Washington D.C. Listed as 11.2% ABV. Hmm.... Comes in a goblet a translucent deep, mahogany amber with a thin, creamy, slightly off white head. Aroma is vinous fruits, pitted fruits, some light spice. Flavor is very nice, tart cherries up front, some light malt sweetness, earthy. Medium bodied and slightly sweet. Extremely drinkable, whether it’s 8.3% abv or 11.2% abv there’s no hint of alcohol. I liked this alot, I could drink a whole six pack.

Draught at Heritage Liquor, Christmas 2009. Dark brown color, and no visible sediment. An all-malt beer, with some fruit and a little yeast, but I’m not sure it is a Belgian strain. Dried fruit, and a medium palate. Abbot is one of my favorite styles, and I want to try more of this.

Draft. Mahogony beer with a light tan head. Sweet malt aroma with raisins and yeast. Rich malt flavor with yeast fig/raisins, and light caramel. Medium-plus bodied. Dried fruit lingers with rich malt, yeast, and some raisins. Very nice.
