It is a popular myth that India Pale Ales were made stronger than regular beers in order to assist them to survive the ardours of long sea travel. Export beers were more heavily hopped, but not necessarily stronger. If you want proof, here it is, an IPA from 1914 at only 4.2%. This predates the imposition of wartime restrictions on drink supply and strength, so was a commercially available beer of the day.

Tommy has a bitterness of 60 IBUs, but this is softened by a high final gravity that gives a full-bodied sweetness to the beer that accentuates the orangey notes lent to the beer by large quantities of Kentish WGV hops, making it a big beer in terms of flavour and character rather than merely alcoholic strength or raw bitterness alone. In other words, what an authentic IPA was once really like.

Bottled (from AbM). Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is citrusy, some mild floral notes as well as some sweet maltiness. Flavour is a nice maltiness along with some mild citrusy and herbal notes along with very mild nectary sweetness. Not much to do with IPA (even the English style IPA), rather is is just a straight forward golden/blond ale. Actually a somewhat decent one.

Bottle at Beer Rebellion. It pours clear golden with a thick white head. The nose is sweet, fruity, pear drops, earth, toasted grass, candy, cheap white bread and metal. The taste is earthy, grass, dough, good deal of bitterness, pear drops, grapefruit rind, sweet biscuit and pepper with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Interesting/odd stuff and ultimately a bit too sweet.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Crystal clear golden body with a thin white head that quickly fades. Very light carbonation. Faint lacing. Sour aroma of stainless steel and grass. Flavour of earth, grass and lemon. Slightly sour. Thin body with a watery texture. Weak fizz. Not great, but I did finish it.

Bottle from an off licence in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Poured a clear, pale golden colour with a scummy white head. Floral hop aroma with some apricots and candied peal. Initial flavours of soft fruit, grassy hop and copper. Finish was dry straw, resin and peppery hop. Not altogether balanced.

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours pale gold with a thin whitehead. Aromas of butterscotch and grassy hops. Taste has a soapy quality. Could be mistaken for a bad lager.
