(Previously labeled Blackberry Lambic). Blackberry is fermented by wild yeast and aged in oak casks for nearly a year, which creates a tart, complex beer. We then add whole blackberries, grown in Indiana, giving the beer a sweet, berry aroma that blends nicely with the tang of sour beer. The beer is bottle conditioned, which adds a zesty and refreshing carbonation. Blackberry is the perfect drink to share with friends over a plate of good cheese and fresh fruit.

(Old description) In the spring of 2006, I brewed 300 gallons of top-fermented beer using wild yeast to create a Belgian-style Lambic. We conditioned the beer in oak casks and then initiated a secondary fermentation in the casks using whole fruit from Huber’s Orchard in Starlight, Indiana. You should experience a tart, almost sour taste balanced by the aromatic and richly flavorful addition of whole blackberries - perfect to share with friends, and a platter of good cheese and fresh fruit. - Caleb Staton, Head Brewer

Sampled at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010. Pours a totally clear, rosy amber with a soft white head. Nice fruity, musty, berry aroma, dusty, hay, grass, berry patch, light malt. Flavor is sweet, tart, fruity, a little grassy. What I like about the Upland products (I had the raspberry the night before) is that their lambic beer base is always there. Finish is medium bodied and lightly tart.

750 ml bottle at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010, courtesy of our kind host CaptainCougar - thank you sir! Pale red color, small white head. Aroma of citrus, summer fruit, rose wine. Hi carbonation, light body. Taste of fresh fruit, slight tarness. Not much blackberry, though.

Bottle at Chriso pre-GBBF tasting 09. Cloudy pink red and gold colour. Fruity, bit of hedgerow. Too acidic. Not much blackberry, but yes hedgerow fruit. OK fruit but just too much malt vinegar. 2.6 Re-rate Bottle at LCRBM 5 at Kulminator. Sour aroma. Its decent fruit. Bit of vinegar. OK.

[9/5/09] Bottle sample during LCRBM at Kulminator in Antwerp. Murky reddish-brown. Wonderful aroma of berries, barnyard and some citric notes. Sour flavor with blackberries, earth, oak and some other fruits. Medium-bodied. Great.

No head, pale terracotta-coloured beer, quite hazy. Superb Brett nose, saddlesoap and leatheraromas with lots of fruit added - but as to which...? Sweet-sour, convincing fruitnotes, nettles and raspberries, but I’m not sure what Americans understand under "blackberries". Brambleberries? Refreshing, sour to tart (hints at tannines) serious carbonation and medium bodied, all the same. Nice, coming pretty close to real fruitlambic (as in real lambic, fruit real enough).

Re-rate 2012: Funky and floral aroma along with the berries. Dry and tart blackberry dominated flavour with some interesting berry and funk interplay complexity

Tasted 2009. Red amber with a slightly pinkish, lasting head. Lots of American oak, vanilla and tannin in the aroma, with a little berry in the background., Very sweet, with a tart edge. Oak and vinegar flavour notes. 3.2

Bottled, thanks xmarcnolanx! Cloudy reddish amber, siry head. Heavily citric aroma where the blackberries lay in the background. Freshly citric with some sweet buttery malt. Lightly spritzy with marked acidity. Does not really achieve the complexity of the originals, but on it’s own it’s a darn fine beer!

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Muddy reddish orange color, no head. Sour aroma, some cherry too. Good body, it has an aggressive sour flavor, with sour raspberries, very lactic. Maybe a bit too much yeast at the end. Good lambic.

Bottled. Amber colour, medium beige head. Aroma is blackberry, some wood, quite tart, but not the dry tartness. Flavour is quite burning tart blackberry, wooden, and some rather yeasty notes. A bit sweetish tart. Really pleasant.
