To make Bumaye 8 Wired started out with the baddest imperial stout they have ever brewed, and then added loads of tasty sugars to the fermenter for extra flavour. To smooth out the roughness, the beer was allowed to mellow in Pinot Noir barrels for 3 and a half years. The result is decadent but at the same time beautifully balanced. Let’s rumble!

Very black with tiny tan head. Thin consistency and a bit oily. Aroma is soy sauce (food), wine. Very alcohol-y in a wine sort of way, not overpowering. Salty, malty, and interesting flavor, but not that enjoyable.

Keg@CBC2013 Opaque dark brown/black, vanishing off-white head. Loads of vanilla in the nose. Full-bodied. Roasted, alcohol, bourbon, vanilla, lingering roastyness and bourbon. Quite alcoholic but I kind of liked it.

Draught @ CBC2013. Pours hazy blackish brown with a small creamy dark mocha head that quickly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is malty, boozy and quite intense with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, soy sauce, alcohol, rasisins, prunes, sweet dark bread, burnt caramel, charred wood, moist soil, dark chocolate, cake, biscuits, vanilla fudge and hints of red wine. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and fruity with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, rasisins, prunes, dates, alcohol, soy sauce, moist soil, charred wood, caramel, burnt cookies, liquorice fudge, vanilla fudge, chocolate cake and hints of chocolate milkshake and hay. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny fruity/roasted tart, boozy and near full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, cocoa powder, moist wood, raisins, prunes, alcohol, brown sugar, salty liquorice candy, soy sauce, vanilla fudge and hints of caramel. Pretty good for the abv.

Bottle from Bobby’s in Santa Clara, CA. Pours very dark brown/black with no head. Aroma is very sugar/treacle with some dark malt and arguably red berry. Full bodied. Flavor is treacle, dark malt and red berry and oak. Mostly dark treacly sugar. Coffee, just a little. Oak/berry gets stronger with time.

From a 330ml bottle on 22/8/2013 (batch 45, BB 2028). Pours pretty much black with no head. Has a big vinous, slightly boozy aroma, with lots of woody notes. Starts out with dark fruit sweetness, with some port-like flavours prominent. This is followed by a distinct, almost tart, spiciness. At the back you get some pronounced roasty, bitter notes which leave the mouth bone dry. For a beer this big, the body is remarkably light, and the carbonation is a touch higher than average for the style. I’m ordinarily a big fan of 8 Wired gear and was hoping this would be amazing, but this one left me a little cold. It undeniably complex and intense, but perhaps a little to harsh to be really enjoyable. Perhaps one to leave in the cellar for a few years.

Tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Pours dark brown with a fine, tan cream head. Sugary dark malt nose, milk chocolate. Big sweet flavor, dark malts, torched oak. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Light dry burnt wood to finish, dark chocolate, some leather. Nice one.

CBC. Opaque dark brown beer. Small bubbly dark tan head. Palate is dry and a little crisp. Big dry wood. Bitterish dark malts with some coffee. Spicy alcohol that tastes more like Bourbon Barrel Ageing. Finishes semi dry.

14th February 2016
Opaque black - brown beer, short lived tan head. Nose of rich dark malts and red berries. Palate is smooth, mildly viscous and has modest fine carbonation. Spicy dark chocolate liqueur, nice Port Wine berries. Bitterish aniseed spice. Light semi dry finish. Some alcohol warmth but not what you would expect from 16.0%. Suspect this will continue to age well.

Bottle, 14C. Very dark brown with a tan head that quickly retreats to the rim. Aroma: molasses, cherries, cardamon fudge, coffee, vanilla, oak, alcohol. I was expecting affogato style, but this is not very goopy at all, quite smooth with low carbonation. Very boozy. Burnt fudgy sweetness rapidly overtaken by astringent coffee and cherry stones. Not much rumbling bottom end. Bitterness creeps up and with the alcohol the finish is like the hum of a defective CRT TV. OK, but nothing I want.
