A traditionally brewed top-fermented beer with refermentation in the bottle. The gluten has been removed from the beer in the lagering, making the beer gluten-free!

A stronger, gluten free version of Slaapmutske Winterbier, a brew I have been familiar with for many years so I'm curious to find out how and where this one differs. Steini bottle from Van Eetvelde in Lokeren. 'Brugse kant' all around the edge of the glass - medium thick, intricately lacing, beige-tinged egg-white, moussy head with good retention (dissolving into a pattern of bubbly 'islands' in the middle); initially clear, coppery bronze beer, translucent with 'autumny' amber hue. Aroma of caramel candy, medlar, fig compote, damp earth, candi syrup or treacle, banana and chewing gum, brownies, butterscotch, raisin bread, strawberry candy, honey, pear, rusty iron (the dawn of oxidation, no doubt), wet dog and something vaguely stinky (slurry pit). Fruity, estery onset, isoamylacetate (banana), pear syrup and candied fig sweetness but nowhere cloying, soft sourish red apple touch, quite sharply carbonated but still fit for the intended style. Supple, rounded, bit resinous mouthfeel, caramelly malt sweet middle with ongoing banana hint, 'cleanly' brown bready edges, candi sugariness lingering a bit towards the end; finishes with a herbal, earthy hop bitterishness mingling with ongoing caramel and brown sugar sweetness as well as a very mild toasty touch; lingering esters (mostly banana again) and clove-like phenols add fruit sweet and spicy impressions. Some yeasty breadiness as well, after adding the sediment. Accessible like all of Danny De Smet's beers, but a bit 'mundane' as well, with a not very pleasant wet dog- and vaguely manure-like note to it and a general profile which is deliberately intended to be everyone's friend here in Belgium. Decent dubbel for the gluten-intolerant Belgian consumer who simply prefers brunettes over blondes, but hardly innovative even if it is literally gluten-free... Slaapmutske did a few better things, though nothing above regional - or "à la limite" national - level, but I have to admit that this serves its own purpose well. Which is precisely what I was expecting.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ van Rooij, Culemborg. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Caramel aroma with some dark fruit. Sweet taste with enough bitterness to keep it interesting. Nice solid dubbel, this being gluten free is a nice touch given the fact it is not that easy to brew a tasty gluten free beer at all.

Een donkerbruin bier met een rode gloed. Het heeft een volle schuimkraag. De geur van fruit. De smaak van gebrand mout met zoet karamel.

Thank you for sharing kraddel + tderock + Rubin77! Sampled @ Bruges Beer Festival 2017. Dark brown amber with a tanned head. Nose is very heavy licorice, bark, roots, caramel, bark bitter. Taste is sugar, caramel, overly big on furniture, low paint, licorice & bitter bark notes. Very good gluten free take on a standard generic dubbel for which I don’t have too much love. Too much bitter licorice, roots & furniture paint notes to really get into it for me.

Stark karbonisierter Antrunk. Relativ süßer Malzantrunk, leicht herb, Noten von Karamell. Dann stört die Karbonisierung, Spritzig, zum Ende nimmt die Intensität ab. Okay. 8/9/9/7/8
