The Export India Porter relates to porter in similar manner to the way the IPA relates to the Pale Ale: they added more hops. We’ve taken Barclay Perkins recipe from 1855, but changed the hops to Columbus and Cascade (American varieties) and hopped it in the same way that we hop our IPAs. The result is a dark brown beer that smells of cocoa, roses, and some orange. The body is quite light, and it is carbonated more highly than usual for a porter to make it more refreshing. It’s quite light in texture and tastes of Turkish delight dusted with cocoa powder – chocolate, rose water and fruit. Dry finish.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours black with beige head. Aroma of dark, bitter chocolate, quite some fruity notes. Tastes slightly sweet with balancing bitterness. Thin to medium bodied. Dry mouth feel, bitter finish. An honest porter!

(Bottle, 0.33 l - bottled on 2024-10-23, from a supermarket, 20250214) The beer poured black. Its head was quite large and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, pine, liquorice and dark chocolate. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, pine, liquorice, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste had pine, ash and bitterness. A tasty burnt brew with pleasant hop notes.

Chinook / Centennial / Mosaic. Bottle at home. Aroma is roasted malt, lots of milk chocolate, fruity hops, tropical fruit and citrus notes, coffee. Flavour is light sweet and moderate to medium roasty hoppy bitter. Body is medium and a bit creamy. Almost a Black IPA, lovely roast and milk chocolate. Delicious. / Chinook. Bottle from Slijterij Groningen. Again, lovely roast and fruity hops combination. Smooth and rich, great.

Magnifica
