Mourning Wood is an oak-aged coffee amber ale. Fresh American oak used during the aging process and Dark Matter’s El Salvador San Jose pulp-natural coffee aromatically drive the beer yet they remain subtle components of the beers’ overall flavor profile. This amber colored, medium-bodied, and extraordinarily well-balanced ale has a delicate taste that is appreciated by beer drinkers of all palates.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 09/05/2013: Pours brown with some ruby around the edges. Medium tan head that dissipates gradually to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, oak and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of roast coffee, herbal hops and malt. The finish is roasty with a malt and coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.

500mL bottle poured into a Duvel tulip tasting class. Amber thick cant see through it. Aroma is coffee, nothing off on that aspect. Some light mint like alcohol peaking through. But pretty neutral base beer. Flavor has coffee but it isn’t bashing over the head. Again, a nicely clean strong ale pretty neutral. A very nice long coffee aftertaste but again not too much. I am not a coffee beer fan but this is very doable.

Tap at brewery. Fresh roasted coffee, and a little bit of smoky oak. Aroma reminds me of walking into a coffee serving bookstore. Hazy amber with a small white head. Sweet caramel malt, earthy smooth coffee - like a smooth Sumatran coffee, and light oak flavor. Medium body and carbonation.

On tap @ Local Option. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head that dissipates completely. Aroma has a lot of coffee with some backing notes of oak. Flavor starts with light grain but finishes with strong coffee and oak.
