December 2009 saw the birth of our Winterkoninske Grand Cru, a strong dark beer to enjoy with moderation. The use of different dark malts results in tones of chocolate, coffee and sherry. This makes it a perfect match for game dishes and chocolate desserts. The strongest winter beer of Limburg.

Another disappointment. This beer scored so high on ratebeer, but what I got was very sweet and phenolic in both Aroma and flavor.

Under the ’Bink Grand Cru’ label. Pour at Shelton Brothers. Big clove and cinnamon aromas with dark chocolate and treacles. More of the same on the palate. Hides the booze fairly well, but definitely a big beer with a warming finish. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Winterkoninkske Grand Cru / Sarphati Grand Cru Oude Olie on 30 Oct 2016 at 23:57 - Score: 7

Jan. ’16. A 0.75 l bottle at Känguruh, Vienna, vintage 2014. It poured very dark and hazy brown body with a small brown hued head. Served a bit too cold. Beautiful, very intense aroma of chocolate, cocoa, licorice, dried fruit and some spices like cloves. Alcohol. Flavor was sweet, alcoholic, maybe a bit too much of both. Pleasant sweet dark malt dominated by the chocolate and licorice included everything else listed in the aroma, too plus caramel and wood, while dried fruit was more pronounced. Full bodied, with a long, warming and sweet finish that followed the taste pretty much. A little bit too strong despite the complexity, but still a really nice Belgian.

750ml bottle shared @Mad for Beer (Rome). Pours brown/reddish with a little but persistent off-white head. Aroma is rich and powerful, dried fruits, oak, cherry, light chocolate, oxidation. Flavour is complex, medium to heavy sweet with a good bitter end, alcohol. Full body, medium carbonation. Amazing.

2011 bottle. Sarphati Oude Olie. Flat, medium brown. The aroma is oxidized toffee, choc, molasses, wood...but oxidized in a way that seems rounded. Quite sweet, with a nice sticky character. There’s a sticky molasses character, with a bit of boozy woodiness in the finish. The sweetness really mellows this out.
