Our take on a robust Americanized Russian-Style Imperial Stout. Moderately hopped to liven up a richly malted classic. This is the base beer for our insanely popular barrel aged Reserve Series variants. You’ve worked hard. You’ve earned this.

Can. Darkest brown, creamy solid brown head. Acid roast, coffee, bellpepper, rose-hip. Medium body, fairly dry roasted, coffeeground, acidic super dry roast, licorice, a bit too one-note. Ok dark coffee aftertaste.

355ml can. Jet black colour with late awakening, average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, beige head. Dark malty aroma with minimally artificial sweetness that reminds of hundreds and thousands, marshmallow, roasty dark malty hints of coffee, grassy hoppy counterweight. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty and bitter hoppy, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, hints of chalk, grass, iron, liquorice, lovage. Inharmonious, un-integrated. Not much more than base material offering links for a promising coalescence with BA flavours or (more or less) typical Impy Stout adjuncts (e.g. vanilla, cocoa, coffee, raspberry etc. pp.). Resembles in sapidity, concentration and function bouillon used as base material for gravy.

12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 1/31/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts the whole glass. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Amazing appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, and pine; with lighter notes of toffee, molasses, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity dark/black/roast/bready malts, earthy/piney hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, and pine; with lighter notes of toffee, molasses, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and piney/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of ark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, pine, molasses, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, earthy/piney hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a nice hop/char malt/bitterness balance; and minimal acrid/astringent flavors lingering after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky/chalky, and lightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Slight warmth of 9% ABV. Overall this is a fantastic Russian imperial stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, earthy/piney hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on, even with the increasingly bitter/charred/drying finish. Very rich and well rounded malt complexity; nice hop presence, without being too aggressive. A highly enjoyable offering, and pristine style example.

Draft/Fest. A- Mocha, cocoa, roasty. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Chocolate, mocha, coffee, roasty, char. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- I actually liked this one better than I thought. I imagine that Black Betty would be too boozy considering how some of their other aged beers come out. This one is just right.
