This Red Ale (also known as Amber Ale) has a good malt presence and a prominent hop profile. Brewed to showcase English hops and to support English hop growers. Fruity, toffee and caramel aroma and palate with an orange peel bitterness to balance the sweet malt flavours from the Pale Ale, Vienna, Münich and Cara malts (with a little black malt). Hop variety is Admiral. Great with Roast Duck.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Light haze on this tawny amber beer, small bubbly pale cream coloured head. Palate is dry with fine carbonation. Dry malt. Light spicy ester. Bitter twangy dry hops, well buried. Finishes dry. Too dry and one dimensional.

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Red with a small white head. Toffee then an earthy bitterness. Dull and unimaginative; quite astonished something so boring came out of Adnams given how good they’ve been in recent years. Meh, possibly heading towards bleagh.

Cask at William Stead JDW Darlington. Clear reddy amber colour, foam white head leaving some lacing and slight malty aroma. Fruity biscuity lightly roasted malt caramel flavour with woody and earthy notes. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, medium carbonation, bitter finish. OK.

Cask handpull at Spoons Shakespeare Head Holborn. Clear deep brown red colour lasting beige head. It’s a fruity malty slightly sherbert hop bitter. Well put together and balanced. I thought this was an interesting bitter. Could have been in better nick. Sherbert hop finish is good. Decent. Just about beer of the day so far
