An all English barley wine – rich plum and fruit flavours, treacley caramel warmth and masses of hop flavour from Challenger, East Kent Goldings and Bramling Cross. The beer is one to sip and savour, or lay down to mature further, maybe saved for a future celebration or a present.

25/3/2023. Bottle from CentrAle, Newcastle. Shared at SBGP1. Pours clear mid-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of treacle, syrup, biscuit, dark fruits, wood and cherry. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness and body. Creamy with soft carbonation. Not bad but seemed a little muddled.

330ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo, who needs some consolation in these days - maybe Italians are not as good in Barley Wines as the Englishmen]. Minimally cloudy, brown-ish ruby colour with small, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white to beige head. Intense, malty aroma, notes of caramel, marzipan, a touch of toffee. Taste is sweet and bitter, malty notes of caramel, marzipan, a touch of toffee, bitter, minimally papery, hoppy counterpart, rather well hidden alcohol; minmally warming finish. Creamy to viscous texture, smooth and soft, slightly cloying palate, fine, soft to flat carbonation. A bit monotonous, not really worth to consume that amount of alcohol with a single beer.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at Pigs Ear 2018, I think. Pours deep copper, clear, with a small, foamy tan head. Great beer, lovely example of the style, lots of rich malts, dried semi-dark fruits, a little earth, toffee, toasted bread. Medium to full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more dried fruits, toasted bread and caramel, mellow bitterness. Nicely cohesive. Solid.

Thanks to LKS. Almost clear deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, plenty of sweetish caramel and toffee. Ripe citrus peel and ripe fruits. Modest spice. Light finish.
