Maybe you rumbled over one every day riding shotgun in the family’s rusted-out pickup truck, or maybe one stands out from some rustic vacation largely long-since forgotten. No matter the case, they remain a symbol of nostalgia and youthful exuberance, a figurative bridge to another time.

Bottle from Half Time Beverage, New York. Pours a deep dark brown with a tan head, slowly dissipating. Aroma of slightly bitter chocolate, roasted coffee and nut. Quite high level of bitterness to taste and finish, medium body, slick texture, with soft carbonation.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 6/8/2015. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around- the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, light nuttiness, light smoke/char, light herbal, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted/bready malt and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, light nuttiness, light smoke/char, light herbal, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roast and herbal hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, light nuttiness, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome porter style. All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to drink for the abv. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours deep mahogany, small brown head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is chocolate, roasty, a touch of anise, dark sugars. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, roasty and dark chocolate notes. Light acidity. Medium body. Quite solid for a basic porter.

0,355 l bottle (BB 27/11/2014). Pitch black with a thick, creamy, stable, light brown head. Heavy aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and cocoa powder. Sweetish-bitter, coffee-like taste with dark chocolate and hints of prunes and raisins. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, long, slightly bitter finish. Great porter which leaves nothing to be desired.

Typical ’robust porter’ made from five malt types and Cascade hops. Tasted years ago at a Vilvordia Bierproeffestival and now again at GBBF, thanks to BeerTemple’s Ster for sharing! Beige, creamy, lacing head, dark chocolate brown colour bordering on black. Aroma of black coffee, raisins, chocolate, dried plums, toffee, black pepper... Full malty taste, thick with a ’dark fruitiness’ and coffee- and chocolate-like dark maltiness, long hop bitter finish, very dry, tonic water-like, very satisfying but perhaps lacking a bit of body for a ’robust’ porter.

11th July 2014 on-tap at the Crow Bar, Orange County. Very dark body, might even be black, difficult to tell in the downstairs of the Crow Bar as it is fairly dark. Deeply tanned head. Coffee and chocolate aromas and taste dominate the brew a really malty roasted feel to it. Semi-sweet overall and a decent beer to finish the night on, as was the case this evening.

Bottle @ Bishops Arms Savoy, Malmö. Black with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, coffee and a little burnt. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 080214

Bottle in NH. Pours deep brown with a large, frothy beige head. Dusty cocoa on the nose, moderate roast and burnt toast. Medium sweet flavor with lovely charred wood, rich and dry chocolate, strong roast, dried fruits, faint raisins. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Very well balanced to finish, plenty of richly roasted malts, char and ash, dark cocoa, mellow earthy bitterness. Exceptional stuff. Respect to Smuttynose for making such solid ore beers. These boys have been killing it for years and really dont’t get enough attention.
