This is a bigger and bolder version of our classic imperial stout Idjit. So, what does that make this beer then? An imperialer (it’s a word) stout? A more imperial stout? Let’s just say it’s big. Big idjit!

For a long time, almost since our very beginning, we’ve brewed our iconic imperial stout Idjit. We’ve not only brewed the regular version but barrel aged versions, putting it in everything from whisky to bourbon barrels. We’ve done a Christmas version and even a half version in which we cut the ABV down a bit. What we’ve never done (commercially) is a maxed out version. Well, until now that is. We’ve wanted to do this beer for a long time, an Idjit with extra everything. A straight forward big, bigger, biggest imperial stout. No fuss, just thick malty loveliness.

Bottled. Black colour with a mediumsized off-white foamy head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, some syrupy and mild sweet alcohol tones. Flavour is sweet alcohol, chocolate, coffee, dried fruits, syrup and some mild wooden tones. Big one, but still well drinkable.

Flaska från SB. 2017 vintage. Opak mörkbrun vätska med en hel del tjocka klumpar. Doft av choklad, kaffe och fudge. Krämiga klumpar, stor kropp, i hyfsat skick förutom klumparna. Medelsöt, med lite bränd kärv beska. Trevlig

BB 05/10/2021, Batch T1117, 330ml bottle bought at Beergium online shop in May 2020

APPEARANCE: pours like a thick motor oil, deep dark brown to black color, dark brown and cola like hues under the light, small ring of fluffy beige like head on the side of the glass

AROMA: rich and complex as expected for the Imperial Stout; loads of toasted and over baked bread, toasted sugars, brown sugar, melting sweet chocolate but also bakers high cocoa chocolate mixed with berries; sweetness of medium strength, notes of molasses and impressions of licorice, moderate coffee, perfume, medium light roasted character on the nose with mild notes of charcoal, bitter bread crust, chicory and herbs; umami notes on the edges; very soft and appropriate plum brandy like alcohol but otherwise masterfully hidden for 12% abv

TASTE: smooth and soft carbonation, creamy bubbles, very oily and syrupy mouthfeel, coating and bold, medium full to full body; loads of sweetness from toasted sugars like brown sugar, dark caramel, fudge, syrup, hints of butterscotch; quite firm roasted bitterness cuts through the sweetness in the middle, green/grassy presence before the finish, sweet coffee and barley coffee, mild medicinal presence on the edges let you know that you are drinking 12% abv monster, plum brandy is more noticeable on the palate than on the nose but doesn't get hot or unpleasant; dry finish with lingering sweetness, roast notes and plum brandy; quite savory and mineral in the second half of the bottle

OVERALL: awesome mouthfeel, thick and oily, more complex on the nose than palate; marriage of old school and new age Imperial Stout; a tad to strong alcohol flavor (plum brandy) for my palate

Aromas of vanilla, cocoa, black fruit, raisins and coffee are raised by a strong and ubiquitous alcohol, constituting a complex and powerful olfactory. A mocha foam settles on a black opaque liquid but fades quickly. The flavors are fruity and chocolatey as a starter, letting the alcohol explode in the final. It is sweet, velvety with notes of strong coffee, chocolate, vanilla, raisins and cherries. The heat of alcohol is strong but not dominant and supports very well the other elements of this very wide taste palette. A complex, warm and delicious imperial stout. A pleasure with every sip.

Well stored bottle. Slightly unclear dark brown body without any head. Aroma has dark malt, caramel, dry fruit and surprisingly little alcohol. Not very sweet either, this is a surprising beer, medium sweet smooth malt, some caramel and dry fruit. Fine body and hint of warming alcohol in aftertaste. Nice.
