Observers of yestercentury once doubted the existence of the Dark Swan, stating the fair-feathered fowl was the only color of its kind. Explorers eventually upended that theory, shocking the world and shining light on the Dark. This beer might just do the same. It’s a sour ale fermented with dark red wine grapes, giving it its uniquely deep and rich purple hue. Then it received the signature Lagunitas treatment with a healthy dose of experimental dry hops. This might just shock your taste buds!

Draught @ Fox & Hounds, Sønderborg. Pours hazy brown with small off-white head. Cler aroma of hops and malt, with some estery notes. Soriish and estery flavour with notes of malt and bitter touches of hops. Quite decent.

Udda!

12 oz. bottle sent by Lagunitas for review. The difference can be seen as soon as I pour: it does look like a red wine, with a fizzy head at the top, and a slightly tart grape smell. The taste is quite puckery, with some grape juice or even Pinot Noir wine up front. I'd say that's just sour grapes, but there's more. Definitely an American hop load adding a citrus note, and then some pine resin. I have to say I really haven't warmed up to hoppy sours; I think the hoppiness takes away from the distinct character of a sour beer. But I'm always willing to try a new idea, and I leave it out there for others who would enjoy it more. The finish settles in on the dark red wine character. The other thing about sour beers is that sometimes I want to get it all past my taste buds rather than sipping it. Its alcohol is well-masked by the sour beer taste, but it starts to creep up pretty quickly.
