“Green Walnut” is a surprising and innovative Lambic beer of Oud Beersel. For the production of the Green Walnut real fruit is used, in the same way as for the Oude Kriek of Oud Beersel.

In July the still green walnuts are gathered in the Oud Beersel orchard and are added to the Lambic beer that matured in wooden wine barrels.

After the bottle fermentation this sparkling walnut Lambic of Oud Beersel is called Green Walnut, which is a strong companion for blue-veined cheese, dried ham and salads with nuts.

The green walnuts macerate in the Lambic beer enabling them to unfold their taste and flavour. The initial bitterness which is extracted from the walnuts is tempered during the ripening of the walnut Lambic. This results in a delicate balance between the light sourness of the Lambic beer and the bitterness of the green walnuts. The wooden wine barrels provide a subtle touch of red fruits to the beer.

hazy brownish yellow colour, moderate sized dense ecru-ish head; aroma of lemony, lactic and acetic acidy, slight acetone, woody and slight cheesy notes; taste is similar to the aroma with some slight sour cherry notes; excellent beer - many thanks for sharing, Kapusil!

Bottle from the brewery, Beersal. Aroma is straight up lambic with little else detectable to me. Appearance is a deep charming lambic gold. Taste is dry, some bitter notes, perhaps from the walnuts. Dry Jura Chardonnay like ending. Otherwise walnuts are not really detectable. A lambic is always a treat, especially on a warm balcony evening. This isn't one of the best and the walnuts remain elusive but it is lovely all the same.

(Bottle, vintage 2017) Golden colour with big, frothy, white head. Fruity, sourish nose with citrus, grapefruit, green grapes, hay, oak wood, horse blanket and barnyard. Fruity, tart taste with notes of grapefruit, sour grapes, barnyard, oak wood, unripe fruit, hay and funky yeast. Medium body, dry. A slight bitterness in the finish (possibly from the walnuts). Really tasty and refreshing with a good acidity. Very nice.

750 ml corked & caged bottle, vintage 2017, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 6.0%. Shared with my son. Golden colour, huge white head. Lovely aroma of brettanomyces and farmhouse kitchen, hints of oaked apple cider. Fairly sour and dry flavour, notes of brettanomyces, hints of apple cider vinegar. A moderate bitterness, probably more from the green walnuts than the hops.

2019 bottle. Orange golden color. Oak, grapefruit, green walnuts in the aroma. Sour, lemony flavor with hints of oak and walnuts, but staying in the background. The lemon dominates. Solid.

0.75 l bottle from 'Belgiuminabox.com', bottled in April 2016, cellared for almost four years. Slightly hazy, golden amber with a medium large, foamy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sourish, quite funky and gently fruity aroma of ripe lemon, rhubarb, oak, horse blanket and a touch of red wine. Gently sour, rather funky-fruity and moderately bitter taste of ripe lemon, some rhubarb, horse blanket, oak, apparently greeb walnut and traces of red wine, followed by a medium long, rather tart, fairly woody-dry, quite bitter, gently funky and a little vinous finish. Almost medium-bodied, very astringent, spritzy and gently effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. The green walnuts only add little to the aroma but even more bitterness. Really interesting even if a bit unbalanced due to the high bitterness.
